I'm not sure what constitutes 'recent' any more, but I still get more calls for
the previous owners of
a number I've had for over two years than I get for myself (well, these days I
pretty much get zero calls
for me on that line because I've mostly abandoned it). Most of the calls are
from bill collectors on presumably
old debt, and one guy keeps persistently calling to sell them something for
their home business, but I also get
automated calls whenever they schedule a Dish Network field tech visit to their
house or they fail to pay their Dish bill,
so either they're still giving out the number or they haven't changed it with
Dish.

Dunno, haven't looked into it that closely. I believe it's tied back to the
national Do Not Call registry as well as the vendor's own list of accumulated
robocaller numbers.

I just know it's far from foolproof despite it being presented as such. I think
our VOIP guys tested it for fun earlier this year and found it to be meh.

The nomorobo thing is legit, although it's not perfect. If your caller's

it won't respond and the call gets a busy or intercept signal.

Re: [MBZ] OT: STOP robocalls

2015-07-27 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
I love roboclals left on my answering machine. They are so easy to delete.

On an unrelated topic, since moving to the new home I have been barraged
with voicemails (usually in Spanish, but not always) for a variety of
people. For example, a soccer Dad leaving detailed instructions to another
soccer Dad on carpooling their little darlings. Also, several for an
anesthesiologist, the last one which made an offer to hire him as a
consultant for $45,000/month (!). I was tempted to inhabit the guy's
character and obtain a one month advance (cash preferred)..

What amazes me is that there are at least half a dozen different
indivisuals who recently had my phone number. How long does Verizon wait
before reassigning recently abandoned listings?

Are you okay with people dumping your calls to voicemail? Who leaves voicemail
anymore?
Actually Angie and I got into an argument about that last one, I call, she
doesn't answer, I hang up. She should know I called. She never calls back but
gets upset because I didn't leave a voicemail. YOU KNEW I CALLED! All I'd have
left on the voicemail was Hi, its me, call me back.Apparently young people
are leading the charge to abandon voicemail...

Re: [MBZ] OT: STOP robocalls

2015-07-27 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
That's nuthin, try clawing back over $1200 in international long distance.
I was cold-called by an ATT sales weasel and foolishly agreed to an
international plan, but instead of getting the 5¢ per minute plan he talked
about, I end up with a plan that charged roughly $1 per minute. Didn't pay
attention to November and December's bills, which were debited directly
from my checking, January rolls around and I finally take a look at the
finances and H!#!?

I immediately called ATT and thanks to God the lady was American. She was
able to fix the January bill, but I would have to deal with managers about
December and November.

My next call was to my bank, once again I was blessed to speak to a native,
this lady educated me on the exact phrasing of the spoken and written words
to communicate to ATT to cancel the debit. That was key. Bank then
reversed the December debit for me, once they had a copy of my
communication with ATT as well as statement from me that I did not agree
to the terms of the international plan that they charged. ATT would have
to send me a paper bill, and I would thenceforth pay by my choice of means.

ATT kept sending me bills for December, I only paid the current balance,
and once per week or more I'd call to speak with a manager about it, and
dutifully recorded their name and date and what they said they would do.
After a couple months I finally got rather upset at a manager with whom
I'd spoken several times who promised to refer the matter to suchsuch
department but nothing ever came of it. The next month I get a notice
from their collections department. I immediately called the collections
number, dumped the whole story all over the collections lady, let her know
the names and dates and promises from all the managers, and pointed out
that I've been a loyal ATT customer for over 14 years and that they had
made a huge profit on my account during that time. I said I was a very
satisfied customer up until this issue, and intended to keep ATT, but if
this matter was not resolved then I would have to find another service
provider. She puts me on hold for about ten minutes and when she returns,
December debt is erased, November is corrected as well, and the next month
I had a credit of about $200.

I've still got ATT, but I look VERY CLOSELY at those bills now.
