Re: [MBZ] OT - Win10 Va Win 7

2019-12-29 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
I've bought SSDs that were thin, with plastic spacers to make them thick.
If you need the thickness to make the connectors line up, leave the spacer on.
If your drive bay is thin, or if the drive is screwed from the side and
thickness doesn't matter, you can remove the spacer.

Right, and there are similar drive sleds to put a 2.5" drive in a laptop
dvd slot.   In my case, the dvd was no good anyway, so using that space
for a second drive was an easy choice.

I bought mine from OWC. (Macsales.com) It came with all the specialized

Assuming you have a SATA (serial) hard drive it's a direct swap except
the SSD is physically smaller. The SSDs I bought came with software
that to migrate everything on the old hard drive to the SSD. That

I'm glad you mentioned that Win10 doesn't shut down all the way. Some computers
don't support that, my (now Philip's) XW8600 doesn't for instance and would get
into reboot cycles until I booted to safe mode and disabled "fast boot" or
whatever they call it.

Windows 10 is a good bit different than Windows 7. I prefer Windows 10. In
fact, as a Mac user for about 10 years, Windows 10 is the first version of
Windows I find acceptable to use. I am not sure I will purchase another Mac.
I think Microsoft has really stepped up their game and Apple has been lagging
since the passing of Steve Jobs. I just switched to Outlook 2019 after finding
that my 'sent' mail from Apple Mail goes into the 'trash' folder when using
Gmail. I'm sure I could read an article on how to fix this and follow the
steps, but the whole point of Mac was 'it just works' and it just ain't so no
more... Might as well buy a Lenovo or Microsoft laptop with a beautiful touch
screen...

If you use the computer on the internet, you can take your
chances. The folks hacking system and encrypting them and holding
the data hostage is a real threat. That is what my friend who
knows and uses MSWin says. One of the things he does is fix the
systems (re-install) so infected.

That is all I saw when M$ "killed XP"   I'm still running xp with
avast.   I've seen no problems, but then I don't receive email, so no
phishing on any xp machine.   It would have to be a hard targeted hack,
and no reason for anyone to do that.

So if Windows Defender is the only thing which will go out of date,
will having a good third party antivirus/etc. be the ticket?

I had to move ours to 10.13 also.  I was not happy about it, but so far
no different than 10.11, only some websites quit whining about safari
being out of date and not supported.   Now the tables are turned, and it
is apfel who forces you to update and arbitrarily tells you your
hardware is not good, even though the new computers sell with
essentially the same processors; while microshaft arbitrarily quits
supporting an OS, but does not prevent you from running it on a
machine.  RIght now I think M$ does a better job of supporting older
hdw, than apfel.   Bah!  Fie on them all!

I've found an SSD will speed boot times and precious little else but
then again I tend to have access to pretty high end drives.
Some of my customers claim Win10 is considerably faster than 7. I'm
not a fan but due to end of support I'm moving my classrooms to
it.Rather than using the start menu in 10 I just hit the windows key
and start typing what I want. It finds it way faster than I could go
through the bloated start menu.
Sadly MacOS really isn't any better. I had to update my Mac Pro to
High Sierra to get away from the reboot bug and it just won't shut up
about going to Mojave. Actually I'm surprised it still wants me to go
to Mojave and not Catalina...

I'd recommend trying the free Win 10 upgrade.  Worst case it goes back to Win

serious security problem in the future.  Why take the chance?

You may (like me) dislike the Win 10 start menu.  If that's the case, try
"Classic Shell" which provides a (customizable) Win 7-like start menu.

THe propaganda when Los10 was new was that it would make older machines
run faster.  I doubt it is true now as they continue to add layers of
patches and bloatware. Most the type and generation of processor, speed,
and amount of RAM and the brains here can help more.

How much memory does the computer have?  That is usually the best way to
