A friend of mine bought some early 80's Colt Hatchback
wheels for his late 80's Colt Vista. Took them to the
tire store to have snow tires mounted. Before you mount
the tires, could you make sure these wheels fit? Sure thing.
I could tell from ten feet away that the hatchback wheels
had more offset. Tire store bozo probably checked the bolt
pattern before he mounted the snow tires and air-wrenched
a front wheel onto the car. The wheel wouldn't turn because
it was binding hard on the caliper. They dismounted the
tires and gave him a refund. As it turns out, they should
have bought him a new caliper too, they bent it and it
would not release the disk.

As for the Snook situation, now you know why the mechanic
who bought the 126 wants the set of 126 wheels, and intends
to take the 124 wheels off the 126 and put them on a 124.
Mitch.

Actually, you are wrong! These wheels do fit. I know because I have
been driving on them for the last several months. The 8 hole wheels came
off of a 1994 E320 wagon. We put them on my 126 without any problems.
 They are genuine Mercedes wheels.

No, I am right. But I can clarify. Like OK Don said, bolting on
and fitting are two different things. It's a simple matter of fact
that the offsets are different enough to cause trouble.

124 wheels will NOT fit on a 126, 107, or 123 without spacers 15 mm
thick or so on the hubs. Otherwise they will contact the brake discs
and front suspension.

126 wheels MIGHT fit on a 124 in the sense of being able to be bolted
on successfully, but they will stick out much farther than the stock
wheels, and I'd expect them to contact the inner fenders at full
steering lock and perhaps also at full spring compression.

Either way the result is not what Mercedes intended and the ride and
handling characteristics of the car will be significantly worse, which
is unsafe in the short term and leads to increased suspension wear in
the long term. The spacers are especially dangerous---penny-wise and
pound-foolish.

The bottom line is, use the wheels meant for the car. Mercedes
engineers (at least in the old days) shared parts across chassis
whenever possible (as we all know from seeing how many parts ordered
for a 124, for example, have 201 part numbers). If there are
different versions for different cars of something superficially
identical (like the 15-hole flatface rims) it's probably for a good
reason.

[MBZ] OT the travails of a 2 ford family

2007-09-12 Thread Donald Snook
After discovering that my 1990 300SEL had a blown head gasket, I decided
to trade it in on a 2001 Ford Expedition. So, now my wife and I have a
97 Explorer and a 2001 Expedition. It is nice to drive a car that has
such modern luxuries like a CD changer, keyless entry, heated seats,
etc. What usually happens is that I get tired of a car in about 18
months. I like the fun of having a car new to me. I spend time
fixing/maintaining everything and shining it up and enjoying the newness
(even if they have all been used cars). So, I will drive the Expedition
for 18 months or so, then give it to my wife and I will her Explorer and
find another Mercedes. I will probably go back to the 124. I really
enjoyed my 90 300D. I really like the 90-95 124's. The diesels are
probably better cars, but I still like the gassers also.

I picked up the Expedition last week on Friday. The dealer is also my
mechanic. He always has 6-7 cars for sale. Mostly Mercedes and an
occasional BMW. But, he had this Expedition. It belonged to one of his
customers who also had a newer S class. Well, he wanted my old wheels
(the 15 hole wheels) from my 126. He was going to take off the newer
wheels I bought from him and put them on a 94 320 Wagon and put my old
wheels back on my car. I didn't want to just give them to him and he
didn't want to spend a lot of money on them, so we worked out a deal. He
did an oil change, transmission flush, coolant flush, and rotated and
balanced the tires. So, I left the car on Friday afternoon and went
back at five to pick it up. When I got there, he was pushing it out of
the garage. The FUEL PUMP went out. So, I asked him is this was my
problem or his problem (I had not paid for the car yet). He said it was
his problem. He ended up having to replace the fuel pump ($500) and
spend all the labor. I know have a 2001 Expedition with a new fuel
pump.

That's why a nice big stable of MB's is so good. I rotate
through them, and they're each new to me again. All the fun
without all the acquisition and depreciation expenses.

Exactly! I'm alternating between cars each day - 126, 124, 107, 126,
124,107, etc., or - Diesel, Diesel, gas, Diesel, Diesel, gas, etc.
My son has the 123 off site at college, so it's out of the rotation.
If you drive each one for a month, it's more like a new one each time.

i had to replace an original fuel pump on a car recently as well. it was on
my 79 280CE.

modern car climate control is the bomb. fuel economy relative to power is
also pretty great. beyond that, i don't know there is much to like.
