Definitely unique for our market. I would lump this in with all the tired,
worn-out old W126 500SELs that are still languishing in someone’s garage or
back 40. At the time those things were well regarded and considered rocket
ships since they weren’t smogged to death. Nowadays they’re barely worth the
scrap value.

[MBZ] What does this even mean? -- If interested please offers starting at $5, 000 OBO! 2012 Mercedes-Benz gl-class GL 450 4MATIC Sport Utility 4D, $5, 000

2024-01-16 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

So tell us what this is.  Start offers at $5k OBO???

Does have some problem, needs new brakes, and does need we think some
sensors on it. Did get it checked out by Mercedes and have an estimate
of what they think needs to be done.

For real cinematography you don't want auto-ANYTHING running during the shot.
Takes more work, of course, but the results are well worth it.

Leaving everything on auto is too Blair-Witchey for me.

You can but those pictures are processed, the halo around the car is a giveaway.

I find DSLR cameras annoying when trying to mess with depth of field, at least
the lower end ones I've played with. Ideally you'd close the aperture to
stretch the depth of field. In practice the camera picks an aperture setting
and adjusts ISO to get the brightness it wants. The Nikon cameras we have pick
a wide aperture (numerically low F-stop) which gives a shallow depth of field.

For making videos this drove me crazy at first because I'd be in and out of
focus during a shot. It took me awhile to find the combination of settings and
of course using lots of light, to get the look I wanted...

Nice, but they’re clearly marketing on the miles. This is not a $12,000 car.

Haha. The panels were installed and went live on July 31st of that year. I
guess they were bulletproof before that date too.

2023-09-15 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Well I ended up with the thing and just got it home. It’s full of o2 bottles.
Apparently it was abandoned and ended up with a tow company. No key, DPF
appears to have been stolen but that’s just an excuse to delete and tune it out
if it runs. Have to get a key for it. I didn’t notice it was no key when I bid,
or else I wouldn’t have bid. Engine compartment is really clean so perhaps it
might turn out OK. Going to have to register it before I can get a key. At
which point I will be in it for way too much for it to be a gamble, but if the
gamble pays off it’s still a $5k vehicle I would imagine. There is a lot of
crap to clean out of it.

2023-09-15 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The guy next door is getting a new deck put on his house. I've been talking to
the builder, he's got solar on his house, said the payoff was 5 years.

He got it because he wanted to have a hot tub. Way oversized the system vs what
his house needed so it would accommodate the hot tub.

This summer I've been maniacal about keeping our electricity use down, we've
rarely gotten over 300Kwh per month yet our electric bills are higher than
they've ever been. I think a solar array is in our future. We only need a small
system and I don't want batteries...

Because of my vision issues I need to have blind spot assist/monitoring.
The only EVs that have this option are Mercedes B250E (2014-2017) and new
Leaf(ve)s, which are over $20k. Another factor is the mandatory 8
year/100k mile warranty on the battery for any EV. This argues for getting
a newer model or one with very low miles. Anything over 50k miles is
probably a nonstarter. "Electric Car Batteries are Warranted. The federal
government requires manufacturers to offer an eight-year/100,000-mile
warranty on all EV batteries. California does one better, mandating a
warranty of 10 years or 150,000 miles."

Re: [MBZ] What every electric vehicle should have.

2023-09-14 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Speaking of diesel, I just removed the grill from my 1985 300sd 126 sedan
in order to replace three of the Chrome molding strips. What a joy to work
on this car. Every nut bolt and screw looks as fresh as if it were just
installed in the factory. This is not a trivial job, so I utilized a couple
YouTube videos for guidance. I had to struggle to remove the vertical
center strip because it had been banged up. I ended up cutting it with
Snips to get it off. The new molding slid right on but had to be cut to
length. For some reason, the vertical strip is NLA. I was able to find one
at Beerbower Classic Auto and Parts. Reinstalling the grill was slightly
challenging because two of the attachment screws are recessed and require a
long socket extender. When the job was completed, it was highly satisfying
to admire the grill without any unsightly distractions.

You want to pull your hair out, then get a Mercedes EV. They are overly
complicated nightmares. Better off with a leaf or a Tesla or even better, keep
driving your old diesels.

The Nissan Leaf is a very simple, practical car. Just like any other car
except you get about 80 miles on a charge and then have to plug it in. I am
looking at Mercedes EVS for 2016 or 2017. They remind me of my GLK 250.
Slightly smaller, but a quite practical SUV. With my solar Giorgio panels

Have you ridden in a Prius? I haven't been in the latest generation (looks a

For some reason I find the brand new Prius to be an attractive car. We make

The thing I dislike about hybrids is not the hybrid itself but that people buy
a big stupid SUV but get a hybrid so its "green"...

Re: [MBZ] What ev to buy

2023-08-04 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I've been thinking about an EV as well. Now that I rarely commute we really
don't need 2 diesel cars. Angie's Golf has been down with a bad tire for 2
months. I went to start it yesterday and the battery was dead. It'd been moved
around the yard a few times so that wasn't a real surprise.

Even one of the low distance older cars would be fine for her to make the 20
mile round trip to work or for me to go 12 miles round trip to the gym. I think
short trips is why my Jetta needed a new NOx sensor earlier this year. I've
been trying to get it on a distance thrash every couple weeks to prevent future
problems.

Alternately I'm thinking about something fun like an old Jeep CJ.

That's a possibility, but one of the main reasons I would want an EV for
running around locally is the lack of need for maintenance/repairs. Bring in an
IC car, even if it's a hybrid, and you kind of defeat that.

The early Leaf cars had no battery temperature management, would avoid.

If you can find a newer one whose owner has become disillusioned by the reality
of owning an EV vs. the sales pitch, offer them 30% of what they paid.

Exactly. Why would anyone voluntarily buy a disposable fake green piece of shit
EV?
My neighbor in Maine bought a leaf this past winter and can’t wait to get rid
of it. She says it runs out of battery on even short trips.

Folks and Andrew

I would not buy a VW anything

If you want to go cheap, buy a used Nissan leaf … they are really sweet …. I
drove a friends 2012 around Atlanta some .. it was nice …. The newer you buy,
the longer the range

My daughter had two teslas … a used model S and a bought new model 3 …. They
are perfect cars ….The S was leased and they gave it back but they bought the
Model 3 and she now has 80k miles on it …. Other than tires the only service
was a failed 12 volt battery … backup power, I guess and Tesla covered that

Although I drove air cooled VW for years I wouldn’t go near one of their modern
incarnations although the ID buzz looks cute but not cheap
