my 300 CD did the same thing when I got it it was a
really really bad diff.  It literally had almost 120
degrees of play. not a prettty sight and not only did
I have to replace the diff but also the 1/2 axels as
well because 1 was stuck on the diff and would not
come off no matter how much you beat pounded or heated
it up. my indie said he'd never seen one that bad that
didn't basically explode the diff.

Worn diff mount, possible play in the diff.  My wagon has some play in the diff, 
and the mount is toast, so I get a clunk that I'm assuming is very similar to yours.

yea, my diff could be worn too I suppose, will probably replace the 
mount first though.  Car has around 280k btw.

I had the same sound in my 123 . MB Dealers in the Boston area 
wanted $2,000.00 but expect the bill to be about 3 to 4 hundred more ... 
Had the work done in Canada for $1,200.00 and billed six hours to do the 
job . replaced the differential gears, mount, and all seals . 
sounds great now
