Muzzle velocity at point of entry is greater from a .22 than from a .38.

.38 projectile presents a wider surface area with less forward speed,
although a greater projectile weight, it's ability to penetrate is less.

Armadillo have survived almost as long as sharks in the great scheme of
things.. seems they adapted rather well to most threats.

I attacked an armadillo with a machete once.  I keep mine
rather sharp - but it just bounced off his back and he didn't
seem to notice.   However, my .22LR rifle has been successful
every time I've used it.  Seems odd that a 38 would bounce
off...  Maybe he missed the armadillo and it bounced off a
rock.
