I have never done the caps on the LCD. I know there are some inside of the
assembly.

thermistor on the W124 diesel and it did make a difference - the complaint was
that the temp would start out around 90F and slowly climb to about 14-F and
then blank (out of range?)

Replace the thermistor under the front bumper cover.
Sadly, all of mine have died, display turned black.
