Cap'n Eddie the race car driver never had a driver's license, even in
the 60s. Before WWI (the war to end all wars) no DL was needed
Afterward, he was so famous. He said if he got stopped he pulled
out the gold 'Merkun Legion membership card the Legion had given him
and showed it to johnny law. Johnny, on reading the name on the
card, would strike up a conversation with the war hero driver/pilot
and never ask for a real driver's license.

It is a great book!

So w/o a glovebox where do you stash the registration and insurance
papers?

The console tray gets a locking jockey box on the newer 126's.
You might need special tools, like a spoon or a popsicle stick,
to break into it.

Early one evening in 1976, I had just departed main gate of George AFB, CA,
with my '74 Plymouth van heavily loaded with beams (sticking out the
rear, etc.) I had salvaged from a small bridge on base to take them to
"cabin" in mtns 35 miles away. Almost immediately, CHP stopped me and
asked for "license and registration." Officer glanced at 'em, returned 'em
and waved me on. Next day, as I was returning the registration card to the
glove compartment from on the engine cover, where I had placed it when the
officer returned, I realized I had given him a 2-year-old card for the '64
Dodge van with MI plates I had sold coupla years before. Officer obviously
did look very closely at card nor vehicle.

I would be trading a W220 for a W126, so it would be like going from

I suspect that a leak is probably due to lack of use. The car hadn't been

Same for a couple later SDs I stripped in the junk yard. My 87 300SDL does
not have a PS airbag.

I love the SDL (in principle; seems I love cleaning the house more in
practice :) but it is not a modern car. I agree with Kaleb, anything over
$4k is because you want it, not because it is intrinsically valuable to the
average buyer. May be worth splitting the difference with the seller?

2015-09-14 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

I'm getting confused.

So the engine in this car is not a rod bender, correct? If not,
what was the issue with these? Are these the ones that would crack
the heads of overheated (#14 head)?

Befuddled Dan

Sent from my iPad

The 86-87 SDL is NOT a rodbender. Those came later and were 350SDs,
until in the 140, they went back to calling it a 300SD, because they
had trashed the name of the 350SD.

all were 14 heads, and some made problems early on. Out of 5 OM603s,
i've owned all were 14 heads and were reliable. Herr Doctor
theorized in his latter years that perhaps most of the bad castings
were replaced by then, and the remaining ones were good. I buy into
that theory.

As long as the compression is good, I would not worry about it other
than to keep the coolant tank filled to the right level and check it
regularly. I put something like 250k miles on my first SDL with the
14 head, and the head never made trouble.

2015-09-14 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
I think a good SDL with nothing wrong would bring 10K, so it is
probably about even value. (understanding the buyers for a perfect
SDL are limited in number) Probably easier to sell the W220.

Another way to look at it is: AN SDL that good for $6000 is a steal.

Given a choice, I'd take the SDL. NO CONTEST a durable real car
(PKW) vs a plastic electron wagon (PEW)

Without doing a lot of legwork, a quick review would suggest that my
car (2003 S430) is worth around $8k-$10, depending on the market and
venue.

I have roughly $6.5k in the car including my purchase price.

Using that as a basis point the question becomes, would the W126 as
described be worth $6k?

That may be why the SRS light is on?

Oil leak and other problems may indicate deeper problems, which may be cheap to
fix once diagnosed, or may be a nightmare if the work was done poorly.

This car sounds more like a nice project, less like a Mercedes Martha daily

Front door speaker grills need repaint
Small oil drip- have not investigated
Driver seat has tear on left side of seat bottom and mesh in
center of bottom has come apart at the seams in two spots.

Either one or both of the headlamp washers are inoperable

What do you guys think? It's obviously to my advantage if I was
interested in such a car.

Dan am I nuts or what?

Re: [MBZ] 1987 300SDL Swap

2015-09-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I've seen the actual bill for the rebuild but it doesn't specify the part
number for the head. It is visible in place as a casting number, isn't it?

I was wondering the same thing myself. However, since the rebuild was done in
2010, would the original heads still be available? I can have him look at it
and tell me. He knows about the rod bender issues so I'm assuming the newer
head was installed.

I would be trading a W220 for a W126, so it would be like going from present
day to the 1980s. Not a bad thing as far as I'm concerned.

I suspect that a leak is probably due to lack of use. The car hadn't been
driven much in the recent past to my knowledge.

Sure he has spent a lot of money on it but a 220 should be worth a hell of a
lot more than a 126.

I'm getting confused.

So the engine in this car is not a rod bender, correct? If not, what was the
issue with these? Are these the ones that would crack the heads of overheated
(#14 head)?
