My current line of thinking, and I think it's becoming a consensus, is that there was nothing wrong with the rods. If the rods were too weak, why do #2-6 practically never bend? The bigger bore meant a weaker head gasket. The main oil galley can leak into cylinder #1, and the resulting hydraulic
also wanted A LOT for the car. I
never saw whether it sold.

Donald,
I have a 1990 350SDL to be exact. It was purchased not all that far from you
in northern Arkansas. It currently has 261,000 miles on the clock and runs
wonderful
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Sadly, you can't read the number on it no
matter how hard you look. I have to believe there is still a serial number
stamped in the block somewhere? Weren't they on a pad right next to the
injection pump?

That looks like an anti-theft VIN sticker, that identifies various major parts
with the VIN so if the car were parted out, police have an easier time
determining which car the part came from.

Plus the metal tag for a crate motor would be located on the passenger side of
the bell housing not on the top like yours is. I have an engine with this in
the shop I will see if I can get a pic. Oh wait, here it is online

If it has a metal tag attached to the flywheel it is a crate
motor. Do you have a photo you can get and send?

Sold the 1990 300D. Just too many questions regarding the integrity of the
engine. Bought for $650, put oil, filter and fuel filters on it, sold it for
$800 to the first CL buyer who showed up.
Can’t say I made money,
Thanks, Kevin.
I don’t think it would have been a money pit, per se, as most of what it needed
was little stuff. Granted, the little stuff can add up quickly, but to sort
out the windows, radio and seat adjusters would have probably taken a couple
hundred bucks, tops.
I was more concerned
I'm glad to hear that you got out from under that thing. It sounded like it was
a potential money pit.
