Yup. Or just a "worn" fuse. I have never overloaded one of those
fuses - but I've replace a lot of failed ones.

As always, a good resoldering with perhaps a replacement capacitor or two
is all yours probably needs to work like new.

The 80 amp fuse is intended for running 6 glow plugs. It is the WRONG
fuse. The correct fuse looks the same but will be 50 amp. This was in
my post yesterday. Another post yesterday told you the fuse was in the
top of the relay, under the relay cover, and exactly how to take the
cover off.

80A. That's what I meant. I think. Whatever it is you can get them at
the stealer, they are (or used to be) pretty cheap. Keep a few in the
glove box along with a screwdriver for any field repairs.

Hello Everyone,
I went out to the car and searched for the fuse and finally found it inside the
cover on top of the relay. I hope it is the right fuse because it was blown
and came out in two pieces. It is just a steel band and looks like the fuses

But this is an '83, with parallel glow plugs and the relay on the
left-front fender.

No, but I'd guess you can buy a new relay for the price kent wants to
bodge up your car. About $130 for a new one and $30 to 75 for a used
one. Check out ebay You can use a 4 cyl or 5 cyl relay. Just put in
the right fuse.
If you think you want to go the pushbutton relay route, let me
Thank you all for the great replies to my questions. I knew I would get the
benefit of all your experience. I will start testing. Since the dashboard
indicator light goes on this indicates the fuse is good. Looks like I need to
get the relay.

I made one correction to Philip's post below. What he said, plus a

1. 240D GP fuse is NOT 20A. It is 50 Amp. You can find them at VW

I was thinking I have seen ones that are different amperage ratings - the strip
is wider or narrower depending on the size. They’re the same length, however.

does not go off after 10 seconds or so as it used to. When I turn over the
engine it doesn’t even try to start. It seems that the glow plugs never turned
on. Is there a relay or fuse that is the
