Re: [MBZ] 240d cooling system flush

2018-01-22 Thread MG via Mercedes
Not a good idea IMHO. You could end up with a bunch of dust and
dirt in the water. The air filters in the dehumidifiers are not
100%. They are built just like the filters in most window AC
units, just a plastic mesh to keep the worst of the dust bunnies
from clogging up the evaporator fins. The rest of the fine dirt
is supposed to get washed off with the water.

I have been using deionized water from the reverse osmosis filter
tap on the kitchen sink.

No. OM61x engines need to have the bypass passage blocked by a
blocked-opened thermostat so the coolant won't short-circuit the radiator.

I don’t have any on hand so what I have done so far is started disconnecting
hoses and flushing stuff out till it runs clear, then flushed some more. Now I
filled it up with water and am running engine for a while. Will then flush it
again. I have some Prestone flush that I will put in it since that is what I
have. I will then flush it again. Drain then pull back into shop and wait for
new thermostat to arrive then fill with g05. I thought I had a new thermostat
around here but all I can find are used ones.

I agree. that is how I have always done it. In the old 'merkun iron
with 4 gal cooling systems, we dumped in 2 gal prestone, then filled it
with water. That way you KNOW it is good to 20 below. If you dumped in
50/50, you'd end up with 15 to 18 below, and could lose an engine or get
stranded when the radiator froze. Of course, blocking 80% of the
radiator with cardboard helped too. (modern version of radiator shutters)

Without a drain cock in the bottom of the block, I always put half the
system capacity of coolant in it, then top off with water, because
there was already some unknown quantity of water in there after flushing.

The drive for an hour to mix the stuff. For me, a round trip to town
to run errands takes care of that.

2018-01-21 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
When I bought my first SDL, the OM603 was running without a thermostat
for the first few months. I thought the thermo was stuck partly open
because it never would get up to operating temp. When I finally
figgered out WHERE the thermostat was, and had the new one in hand, I
had to stick my finger in both sides before I believed someone had taken
out the thermostat and put it back together without a thermostat. I
have run OM616 without thermostat for a few days before without any
problems other than the engine not getting up to normal operation temp.

I can only tell you my experience with my '81 300TD. I saw the same
thing in my '83 240D. If you run the engine up to operating temp, then
shut it off and restart it'll over heat. I think with that procedure
you could get away with it because you don't stop and start again but
you can't drive around (or at least can't drive around much) without a
thermostat.
This is almost as bad as the argument about driving around with a
loose pressure cap, that one I did a lot of...

Maybe this is a good reason to do the dishwasher detergent treatment after,

Re: [MBZ] 240d cooling system flush

2018-01-21 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
The question rises, at that concentration, would it hold the acid in
suspension? 14 oz per gallon [approx] is pretty close to absorption point,
I would think

Should do an "extra fine job" of pulling scale and iron rust off the
interior surfaces of the cooling system followed by a flush, flush,
flush... rinse, then flush... to stop any further reaction.

Re: [MBZ] 240d cooling system flush

2018-01-21 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
To be honest if you buy that link I posted I also get a kickback through the
Amazon affiliate program.
For general cleaning you don't need very much, I usually get a gallon of hot
water from the tap and add 3 or 4 tablespoons. One time I cooked the crystals
in, I can't remember how much I finally got in but it couldn't have been a
whole cup.
I think MB wants 10% mixture, I have no idea how to calculate that but I
suspect a couple tablespoons in a gallon would de-scale the system just fine.
That amount works great to clean brass lantern parts. If you leave steel in it
for a week or three it disappears. I found that out the hard way.

2018-01-21 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I can only tell you my experience with my '81 300TD. I saw the same thing in my
'83 240D. If you run the engine up to operating temp, then shut it off and
restart it'll over heat. I think with that procedure you could get away with it
because you don't stop and start again but you can't drive around (or at least
can't drive around much) without a thermostat.
This is almost as bad as the argument about driving around with a loose
pressure cap, that one I did a lot of...

realize Marshall was adamant about blocking open the thermostat. In this
instance, he was contradicting what the manual indicates, in other words,
wrong.

On OM602 engines, you DO block open the thermostat, I believe.

A 61x engine with the thermostat removed WILL overheat. The thermostat closes
the passage back into the engine forcing coolant into the radiator.
Interestingly with a cold engine it won't happen right away but if you get the
engine warm, shut it off and restart it'll overheat rapidly.

On 61X engines the thermostat is removed. On 60X engines the thermostat is
blocked open. At least that's what the factory manual says. ‎And no I don't

Yup. Granules, or crystals. If I could've waited the two days for delivery, I
would've ordered online. With the car on jack stands and all the coolant
drained out, I needed it today and not tomorrow. I think I did a search and
this stuff turned up. I went to Menards and sure enough it was citric acid. I

Re: [MBZ] 240d cooling system flush

2018-01-20 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
You need to have citric acid on hand - for cleaning auto cooling systems,
removing mineral deposits from the dishwasher, coffee pot, tea kettle, etc.
(I'm guessing that your water is rather hard like ours is).

(where I've bought it before)

Well I just finished it up and pulled it back in the shop. Looking down in the
radiator cap opening the top fins of the radiator look sparkling clean. I will
say when I flushed it again after running the prestone in it a lot more junk
came out, then on the next flush it was pretty clear. I would say this stuff
seems to work ok.

I am simply amazed at how dead simple these cars are.

Re: [MBZ] 240d cooling system flush

2018-01-20 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I spoke too soon. After flushing it the 2nd time while running it came out
clear. I put the prestone in it and it’s running again for another 20 minutes.
Will then flush it again and call it good.

Re: [MBZ] 240d cooling system flush

2018-01-20 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I would wait until you get clear water, or it’s just going to be crudded up
(still), just not as bad as before. I would flush it from the hose on the back
of the engine with the radiator cap off. Run water through it for 5-10
minutes, then close it up and run it and check.

My 82 300SD had a cooling system like this - it looked like orangish mud. Took
quite a while to flush it out.

Is it oily? Isn't that the case where you put a little dishwasher detergent
(not dish soap) in?

2018-01-20 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Do that and if you’re really worried about the citric acid flush, just got to
the store and buy a sh*tload of KoolAid lemonade flavored drink mix - the stuff
in the packets, not the container. It’s pretty much the same thing. I use it
for cleaning dishwashers, washing machines, anything that needs a good
degreasing/cleaning once in a while.

That being said, I have only done the citric acid thing once in my life, and
didn’t feel like it really made a difference either way. Now I just flush with
clear water., run it for a bit, flush it again and replace the coolant.

I don’t have any on hand so what I have done so far is started disconnecting
hoses and flushing stuff out till it runs clear, then flushed some more. Now I
filled it up with water and am running engine for a while. Will then flush it
again. I have some Prestone flush that I will put in it since that is what I
