Re: [MBZ] 9th generation S-class...

2006-02-09 Thread Loren Faeth
I agree with the factory. I am not as familiar with the 187, but there
were definitely S models with the same distinction then as now. S has had
two concurrent meanings of years in reference to MB models.

S as in Sport 300SL, 190SL, SLK 230, 170S
S as in Super 220S, 220Sa, 220Sb, 300SE and so on forward.

Then mid 60s 300SE is a beautiful car. IMHO, it is the only Mercedes Benz
that rivals the appearance (profile) of the long 126 for beauty and
style. Every time I see one, I drool, because they are so rare. Its
engine borrows heavily from the 300SL technology.

Actually, I could argue that the 51 to 53 models are the second generation
S as in Super chassis

Prewar, there was the Typ SS (Super Sport) (and yall thought chevy
invented that name in 1965)

and the typ SSK (Super Sport Kurz)

Great site, Chuck.

But if you don't have broadband or cannot utilize Macromedia Flash 8, as a
public service here is a summary:

1st 1951
W187

2nd 1954
W180 (Ponton) 1st unibody car

3rd 1959
W111/112 (Finnie) 1st concept of "passenger cell"

4th 1965
W108 /109 (designed by a Frenchie)

5th 1978
W116 First to be called S Class; first car anywhere with ABS

6th 1981
W126 1st car with Driver's Air Bag and seat belt tensioners

7th 1992
W140

8th 1998
W220

9th 2007
W221

older ones...meaning "touring" more or less, I think. SL (sport leicht) for

Of course if you really want to pose/show off then the sports or Maybach

don't like the sound of that although propably in keeping with the attitude

Makes sense, the Super class couldn't exist until they had a
proper compression engine for it. Maybe that's why the MBUSA

We could be here debating that point for ever, I could argue that only since

the class system was truly introduce in 94 can a big merc be called an S
class.
A pontoon or finnie is not what you would call a S class but the bigger
limos of that era could be put in the S class category.
However to keep the peace I think we could all agree that the 108/9 is the
first real S class due to it's relatively large production run.

Why not agree with Mercedes? There was a Finnie S (300SE) and a Ponton S
and a 108/109 S.

Myself I personally consider that #1 too but was just basing my comment
on cars that are actually called S class.

I'd go along with you if you included the 108/109SEL as #1.
