Mobil one back in the day vs very hard to start below freezing with Castrol

The original oil specs probably were not for synthetic. Synthetic 15W40 should
be good for lower temperatures.

where as later and I believe current oil charts show it good down to 5 IIRC.
Why such a big difference from back in the old days? Is 15w40 today that much
better and can be used at lower temps than 15w40 from 40
