In my mind's eye, I see the bands thing, but do not know enough about how the transmission works for that to take place. The PO spent a few hundred $$ last summer dealing with a problem shift issue. Maybe the dork at the shop adjusted things to even out the shift, but did not install the

I am uneducated on just how it all is mated. From screwing around with it I know that I can fire off the engine and get it running. It will stay running as long as it is in Park or Neutral. Torque converter must sort of be spinning around slowly, maybe? Parking pawl was not engaging prior

You're right, the TC is in series with the whole mess. No way the car should be able to stall out unless the TC is misbehaving, or the engine is running like total crap. A TC dragging inside enough to kill the engine is probably filling the tranny with shavings. I'd swap them both out. -- Jim

There are two sources of stall torque I can think of within the AT: 1) The TC's stator is just that: static, so if the TC's vanes are dragging on it that'd do it. 2) The internal clutch packs/bands are receiving conflicting demands, and the thing is trying somehow to go into both forwards and

The whole theory of the car is that it will be entered in the 24 hours of LeMons race next year. My budget is limited by their rules that getting it running and purchase price can not exceed $500. I am scouring Freecycle and the freebie section of CL for all I can repurpose to get it going.
