The trans is supposed to stay in 2nd until you move out. This is supposed to be easier on your braking foot since there is less torque being transmitted in 2nd. The hotter it gets, the slower the downshifts get. Occasionally, mine will sit in 2nd, then as I start off, a delayed downshift to 1st will occur. It will clunk rather sharply down to first. It is supposed to go to first at the first motion of the throttle pedal, then their is no shock wave. Mobil 1 ATF will cure, or at least raise the temperature at which clunking occurs. If it does it more and more often, look for a worn bushing in the lower end of the rod that goes from the throttle linkage down to the passenger side of the transmission. I think yours has that rod, some have a cable, and some don't have any mechanical feed back to the trans. Actually, what it felt like was someone slightly nudged me in the rear at the light. The car pulled away normally in the correct gear. Everything has been normal today. Strange. When the transmission mount fails, you MAY experience sort of a clunk as the car slows to a stop - at least that's ONE symptom I've seen. The '79 300SD sits in 2nd, but drops to 1st when you start. They are NOT the same and can't easily be made the same (the valve bodies ARE different).
