The 600s has SLS. However, without looking at it I'm betting the top strut 
mount failed.  If the rubber gets so bad on one of these that it fails, the top 
of the strut can literally punch through the hood. There are retainers that are 
supposed to prevent this, but if they're out of place or missing there is 
nothing to keep the strut from punching a hole in the hood.

Did any of them (600SL) have four wheel SLS?
Or could it be so neglected that the spring seat rusted off the strut?
This one looks like the right front fender collapsed onto the tire.

They have a typical strut setup that is not prone to rust out like the W210 
spring perches, if that’s what you’re asking.

If you are familiar with a W124 front suspension, it’s very similar.
