Further evidence that those who believe the Flat Earth theory are
correct at the end of the road, you fall off the earth... apparently.
Perhaps a theory modification is in order to include the "Flat Internet
Theory" it does seem that things get lost and can't be found, so that
theory may apply to the interwebs.

Hard to say. I’ve made the improvements over such a lengthy period of time it’s
tough to compare. The one noticeable thing is that the front left isn’t sunk
down a good 3-4 inches like it had been.

I’m probably going to drive it to work tomorrow since the AC is working now.
I’ll be able to wind it up good on the reversible lanes in the morning as no
one will be out and it’s a really, really nice road surface.

I sand the rusted area and if I have time I thoroughly de-rust with naval jelly
which takes multiple applications over a 24 hour period to really clean it up.
I then paint the por-15 over the repair area making sure to get some on back
surface of hole edges. While por-15 still wet I impregnate the fiberglass patch
with por using a cheap chip brush and apply to the repair area. I dab it with
the brush or gloved fingers to get it flat over the repair area. Once dry, I
sand and reapply por-15 or another layer of por impregnated fiberglass as
necessary. It creates a very solid and long lasting repair. Once all done and
dry I spray the hell out of the back side of the repair with fluid film.

There is some rust through in the very front of the rockers where they face the
wheel well. Inside of the rockers is fine, jack points are good. I just need to
seal up the opening to prevent future corrosion, that’s all.

I’ll fog the inside of the rockers with something like bar oil or a rust
preventative then cover the opening with a patch using seam sealer to seal it
up good and tight.

[MBZ] Finnie Fun!

2019-06-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Yup, I’ve gotten back in the flow on the finnie. I won’t have the blog post up
tonight probably, but in a nutshell I replaced both rear swing arm bushings and
frame bushings (sort of like subframe mounts without a subframe - the big donut
shaped bushing where the front of the swing arm bolts to the body.)

These bushings have a 36mm nut on both sides of the bracket on the axle tube
that are absolute pigs to get loose, especially after 50+ years. Fortunately I
had lots and lots of Kroil and a 36mm socket that was ground down so it could
cover the bolt head and nothing more. Using a large “C” clamp to hold the
socket and breaker bar in place on one side, a 6’ piece of pipe provided
adequate leverage to break them loose on the outside. The inside bolt head is
accessible by an impact wrench, so those were easy.

I blew an hour trying to jig up some sort of press, as the bushings have to be
compressed in order to place a large washer over the center sleeve and secure
it with a “C” clip. You put a clip and washer on one side, put the sleeve
though the bushings, then compress the bushings and washers so you can get the
“C” clip in place on the other side.

Got that done and the first (right) side back in place with a new front pushing
and spring pad.

Left side went pretty well and with the assistance of my youngest running the
floor jack to get the swing arm lined up and back in position and I was done.

Oh, yeah - I installed the refinished wood trim on the right side door cards,
too.

So here’s what I have left that I can think of:

Remove, refinish and install wood trim on left side door cards.

Replace firewall material and rodentally masticated wiring harness braid/jacket
in engine compartment

Minor rust repair at the leading edge of both rocker panels.

And that’s it!

Too true. My 300D has had nothing but a hole in the dash where the radio
used to be for the past 13 years or so. I have a radio (not original
type) to install but have not bothered as I really don't care enough to
put it in. My son offered to do it but all it would really do is to fill
the hole.

How archaic.

You could have fun by turning it on, and then giving a voice command ("play
now") after 2 minutes. Your passengers will be very impressed at the
advanced technology from the '60s..

Re: [MBZ] Finnie Fun is Baaaack!

2019-06-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Thanks!

I was really struggling with what to do radio-wise. Finding a working Becker or
other brand that is period correct is getting to be pretty expensive these
days. Luckily, I found this one for cheap from a BW forum member who had listed
it for sale some months ago with no takers. No faceplate, which was an issue,
so I camped out on eBay and lucked into someone selling the correct faceplate
for $30. To give you an idea, they normally sell from Becker for around $150 or
more, and that doesn’t include the hardware.

I had a bag of hardware from the original Blaupunkt that was in the car, so
again, I lucked out in that regard. Only thing I had to pop for was one chrome
shaft nut from Becker - $25.

The real kicker was when I first set it up and got nothing out of it. Darn!!
And then I realized it was a tube radio and had to warm up…2-3 minutes powered
up and it was making noise. Whew!

Nice job. I remember doing a similar restoration on my W111 coupe front
door panels. In that case I replaced the leather reusing the old masonite
backing.

Got my rear trailing arm hardware kit in only to realize I didn’t get new lower
spring pads (bushings) when I ordered the kit, so this job got pushed to next

Re: [MBZ] Finnie Fun!

2019-05-06 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I don’t know that it would have been easier, but I would have spent a lot less
time on my back under the car. Everything remained pretty much static while I
was doing the work. I just had to raise or lower the differential a little a
couple of times during the job to get things aligned.

I had the car off the ground with ramps and jack stands all the way around, so
it was up in the air maybe 18”. Since I had to get to the drive shaft, front
flex joint and center bearing, I had the whole thing up as opposed to just
having the rear up in the air. Made is a lot easier to get to everything as the
job progressed.

Do you take a wire brush to it (hand, drill, or angle grinder) and go at
the rust to get it down to cleaner metal?  Or just let the chemicals do
work?

2019-02-22 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Not sure. I watch US eBay, but there is a lot of stuff on German eBay as well.
I would really like to find a good taillight and upper bumper on that side, as
both are pretty well shot as far as the plating. The bumper is in very good
physical condition, so it’s definitely a candidate for replating, but that’s
time consuming. I paid $150 for the left one from a German supplier, but he
didn’t have any right side ones. That’s about what it would cost to have it
replated.

A lot of goodies for these cars on German eBay. The only problem is finding
sellers who will ship overseas.

Chrome is usually pretty thick on the older cars and you don't remove more

When I do the wipe-on poly I do the sanding between the final few coats, maybe
400 wet sanded with thinner to get the nibs out, then an extremely thinned coat
for the last. Maybe 40% varnish the rest thinner. It fills the tiny remaining
scratches. On that final coat after it dries a day or two I rub it with
steel wool and paste wax then buff it with an old cotton cloth. Gives a nice

Three most useless things in aviation:
1. Fuel still in the pump on the ground.
2. Runway behind you.
3. Altitude above you.
BTDT all aviation wrecks start and end on the ground.. plan ahead.

A funny story:

Today I drove the 220SEb to work and then on to my headliner guy's shop so he
could survey it in anticipation of doing the headliner and related items early
next month. It's a roughly 20 mile drive one way to work, half on surface
streets and the other half on a reversible toll road with limited
access/highway speeds (65 mph.) It's a combination of the two over to the
headliner shop of about 10 miles, making the return back to the house much the
same of about 30 miles for a total of about 60 miles round trip.

We've all been in my shoes - a relatively new (to you) unproven car, taking it
out on the road, listening to every noise, vibration, hum, whatever, riding on
the edge just waiting for something (bad) to happen. You hear something and
start to freak out

Drive to work - uneventful, maybe even fun. The toll road is a reversible with
three lanes, no access for roughly 11 miles. Very nice road surface, new and
smooth as glass. The car ran flawlessly, in fact, it found a sweet spot in the
upper 60s that made it sound great and was really tracking and handling quite
nicely, considering that I am in serious need of new front springs. Cool. Got
to work without an issue. Whew!

Drive to headliner shop - interstate and city streets, busy but the car did
well again. Not a problem.

Drive home, mostly interstate except for the last 10 miles or so, which is
surface streets. Again, ran well, no problems. Even fired up the FrigiKing
since it was nearly 80 and got some ice cubes running - well, plenty of cold
air. About a mile from home I was turning through an intersection and it
sounded like I ran over something small in the road. Hmm. No problem, car was
running fine. Probably a big rock or some piece of junk I didn't see.

Pull into the garage. Need to straighten out the car a bit, so I put it in
reverse. It continues to creep forward. Hmm. Put it in neutral. Creeps forward.
OK, I'll just leave it here and I'll park the wife's SL500 so she doesn't bang
the door into my car, since it was encroaching into her space a little.

Get down on my hands and knees and take a look under the car. Yup. Transmission
linkage bushing failed. Got a couple on their way from the MB warehouse in
Jacksonville. I totally trust this car now.

[MBZ] Finnie Fun

2019-02-08 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes

 Yup. Just chipping away.

I’m juggling the logistics of the headliner replacement right now. I just
ordered my new reproduction dash pad from the supplier in Turkey, which
should arrive in a couple of weeks. I started tearing into the dash
yesterday and hope to finish that up today. That way I have the wood out
of the dash so I can start refinishing it.

I need to drive it over to the headliner guy in the next week or two so he
can get an idea of what he’s going to do and can order materials. I have a
new MB headliner, but he’ll need some padding and he’s also going to
replace the windlace while the car is in the shop, too. Both windshield
and rear glass will come out for this, so I’ve got to get seals ordered
 soon, too.

The wife is going in for hip surgery on the 6th of March, so I want to get
the car to him before then so he can have it for a week or two to do his
stuff while I’m busy doing home health care. Once he’s done I hope to have
everything done on my end as far as refinished wood and the dash pad
painted so it will begin to come together after that point.

Yup. There’s a guy in Turkey who has been making reproduction dash pads for a
number of years now. Only place you can get one. $800 versus over $1600 and 6-8
months to get yours redone by the dash guys in CA. Because of the packing and
bulk it costs over $200 to ship one, but it’s still a good deal. I’ve talked to
a number of people who have gotten them and they’ve all been really happy with
the product. Black only, but it can be painted. I’ll be painting mine dark
brown to match the original.

He also does some other reproduction stuff, like grille trim, door seals,
firewall padding, etc., too.

Saw your writeup and the other guy's photos of the process, looks easy
enough.  The headliner on there now is gray, I'm thinking black to
replace it, maybe even buy a whole black leather skin to do it!

This is wife’s “other” hip - she had her left hip replaced in 2014, I think. It
was just a matter of time before this one failed. I don’t mind all the stuff
dealing with this. Since I can do a lot of work from home it works out pretty
well, as I still take FMLA leave but I do it “intermittently”. That way I can
work at least part of the time and not have to worry about exhausting my
accrued time. Fortunately, my employer is pretty cool about it.

Thanks for the wishes. She’s an old hand at this stuff. I would be freaking
out. I haven’t been in a hospital since the 1960s. I’m hoping to keep it that

The headliner on the SL is also drooping and falling down, I guess when I can
get the hardtop off it will be time to reglue it or whatever one does, won't
have to send it to a specialty shop. Your expertise will be helpful in that

material on the SL600 I think, it feels kinda dense and rubbery, maybe it is
actually fabric of some kind. I also noticed that EVERYTHING in the cabin is
covered with leather, no vinyl, it is pretty cool.

It was kept in a covered boathouse in the summer and in a building in
the winter.  But it spent a lot of hours on the River.

We stripped and varnished the 1958 Owens cruiser in 1962 or 3.  It was
re-varnished with Varithane marine.  about 10 years later it was sanded
and recoated.  never peeled. It was mahogany and mahogany plywood.

My homemade sailboat, however, peeled.  It was Varithane, but not marine.

the paint factory store sold a couple of brands of marine paint (not
their product) and they said to use Varithane marine.

I finished an outdoors table I made in Minwax spar varnish thinking that
was the correct finish for something exposed to UV all day, every day, just
like a boat. In three years it looks like one of the worst cases of clear

My brother-in-law is a merchant marine captain and long time sailor, so I

Jaime refinished the wood in his w108 250S that he recently sold on BAT. The
finish was pretty much spot on to what original would have looked like. I
believe he used a catalyzed urethane based clear coat in a satin finish- or
used some kind of gloss reducer additive? Might have greater durability than a
spar varnish but I’m far from experienced in such matters.

I wonder if the catalyzed finish like Bona floor stuff would work.
Water-based, thin, you mix in a second part, wipe it on, it self levels,
then in a coupla hours it is fairly hard.  Not sure if it comes in a
gloss or if it would just run off some curvy wood pieces.  Kinda pricey
for a gallon to just use like 3 ounces on some wood pieces.  There is
some stuff used for bar tops that is glossy and catalyzed but again not
sure how thick or sticky it is.

Re: [MBZ] Finnie Fun

2019-02-01 Thread Dwight Giles via Mercedes
Dan,
I really can't argue with that or your experience. I liked the oils for
wide grain woods like oak which were not exposed to outdoor light.
Looks like the wood in my 123 has a heavy coating-maybe even some kind of
acrylic?

Re: [MBZ] Finnie Fun

2019-02-01 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
After I read this again, I have a correction….

Danish oil does protect wood and work well in severe environments - BUT - it’s
not good at UV protection. It’s a big one for use on teak in marine
applications, but the thing there is that teak is a super dense wood that has a
lot of characteristics that make it do well in that sort of environment - the
Danish oil just enhances those characteristics to some extent. It also requires
regular maintenance as well to keep the finish.

So that’s to say that you could use Danish oil as a finish, but you’re going to
have to maintain it. I guess if you wanted the “look” you get from Danish oil
you could top coat it with spar varnish and let it do the protecting.

Wood finishes are many and varied. There are a lot of people who have found
what works for them and they stick to it. If you’ve got a Sam Maloof rocking
chair you’re probably going to use Danish oil on it, not some spray bomb stuff.

Oil will seal the wood but won’t protect it. And being an oil, it eventually
breaks down from exposure to the sun and requires regular (re) application to
maintain the finish.
