I know what you mean. I wanted a w116 back in 1996 when I began my hunt, and there was nada around here so I went to Southern Ontario, where there is markedly less salt used in winter and lots of nice older luxury cars (or so I thought). In the process I also found the world's largest concentration of liars ;-). About 18 months later I was ready to buy a ticket for Cali to go find one, when an ex-Cali car owned by an ex-diesel wrench turned up by accident 20 miles from me. Don't despair, trudging out to see used Benzes is like an evening at the casino. Every time you pull the lever, you really don't know what's going to happen next. My story was the same - wanted a Mercedes diesel, started reading this list to start learning and get the lay o' the land. Was tough to wait and look for the right deal, especially as I noted that these autos are getting real popular (visited Santa Barbara at the time). Finally one fell into our lap (brother spotted it as he was out walking one evening). I think you'll find yours. I've found that: The 3,4, and 5 hundred thousand mile claims that made me a beliver may be true of these diesels, but only if the thing has been taken good care of. These things suffer from neglect like all cars. The nice rust free 240D I bought suffered from rust inside the engine. Had to get a replacement engine to the same $ tune of the purchase price. There seem to be real nice options popping up on the list from various sources all the time. I find myself saying that if I was still looking, I'd be jumping on this! (of course it helps a bunch if the thing is somewhere near your locale). Wish ya the best. It sounds like you've got a good strategy. There's a good one out there, believe that! I found my '83 300SD after looking at many many junkers, even driving miles to see them! Then one day, it just fell into my lap when a guy on another list posted it for sale. I was looking for something in the $1K and under range, and it was $1500 (ended up getting it for 1300). A year ago I had a nice SD get plowed and it looked like they were going for $8k or so... for $17k you can get a NICE E300Dt.. (okay it doesnt have the cool of a wagon but it is way faster :)
