The requirements for double walled tanks and leak detection systems have been
in place for some years, probably since the mid to late 1980s, I believe.

Re: [MBZ] Is fuel from various quickie marts trustworthy?

2013-11-13 Thread Rich Thomas

Yes.

Quickie marts move a lot of gas, they don't make much of anything on
it. They make their money on cigs, beer, and lottery tickets that the
gassers buy. The gas is the hook to get them in there. A neighbor of
ours in Houston had been the VP of sales for the big Bud distributor in
town, so he knew the beer bidness inside out. He left there and joined
up with a guy who owned like 75 quickies all over TX and LA, mostly
because he understood the beer bidness and knew how to wring every $ out
of the beer sales (and costs). He was doing quite well.

On another interesting note, the distributor was running something like
$10M a month in sales, more or less. Their accounts outstanding (the $
they were owed) was <$5k a month -- all the beer was cash and deliver,
and the owners always had the money to pay for the beer deliveries as
that was their cash cow. Beer distribution is a great business to be in.

Have the environmental rules become stiffer down in the USA?
It used to be quite common here for gas stations to have leaky tanks
and thus water infiltration.
That has become pretty much a thing of the past because they have all
been forced to upgrade their tanks and must keep careful records to
determine if there is any leakage.

Hendrik will probably chortle at this, but when I visited rural Australia I
was baffled by fuel station signs listing prices for "petrol," "diesel,"
and "gas," until I realized "gas" meant CNG, or possibly propane.

Err, "fuel" is the general term that includes both gasoline and
diesel. Among truck drivers, the term "fuel" where most people in
the US use "gas". Like, "My fuel tank is mostly full, so I'll keep
going.", or "What's a good place to get fuel on US 50?", or
"Someone stole my fuel cap."

So when I read "fuel", generally interpret that as "not-gasoline" -
typically diesel, though it could be CNG (compressed natural gas),
kerosine [paraffin], propane, hydrogen, uranium, bunker oil, WVO,
etc - or even gasoline [petrol]!

They might cut it with higher amounts of ethanol depending on your
location. I think the Federal standard allows up to 15% now which I
would only want to run in a Flex-Fuel vehicle that was specifically
designed for high ethanol blends.

Check the octane also, the really cheap places around here blend it to
86 where as most regular unleaded is 87.
