It has to do with the IDE/SATA mode--AHCI will not work without the intel
matrix storage manager drivers. The other option will work to install, then
install the MSM drivers, then change the setting.

Using your good suggestions, the hd was wiped, partitioned, and formatted,
but the hd could still not be found on bootup. After reading Johns
suggestion below, I looked for the other option he mentioned which turned
out to be the compatibility mode in the bios. After toggling it, I

My copy of WinXP started loading from a CD but stopped because it could not
find any hd's?
I would guess this is a security feature installed by
Try installing any Linux distro and see if they can ignore the pw. If
not, you'll need to figure out how to crack the hard drive pw, or
replace the hd.

Dowload a copy of the Universal Boot CD. There are password reset utilities on
it that will allow you to reset the administrator password and get into the

That drive is not an FDE drive; there were only a couple of FDE drives in the
T61's, and they were hitachi or seagate. (I've got a couple of T61p's that are
still working well.)
They were made for vista from the factory, but had XP as an option. They run 7
and Linux without an issue.

On at least some T-61's there is a compatibility mode in the boot setup
screen that you may need to toggle. I have do to that on my T410 when
using imaging software.

Do a search for slipstreaming updates and possibly XP Pro.
IIRC somebody had a magic plan to slip an older disk up to SP3 but I
don't remember how.

Ok, I was late to the party, and Dan had already answered.
For the terminally lazy, here is a link. Petri is pretty reliable.
