What is the torque setting for the head bolts when you put it back together?

Are you going to need a monster torque wrench?

My son was working on an F250 Diesel and they needed a wrench capable of
something like 500+ foot pounds.

My experience with that is that you sort of mix what you need when you
need it as the acetone evaporates out too quickly to keep any around for
any length of time.

IIRC, you torque to given value - not all the great, then turn the bolt 90
degrees, let it sit for 15 minutes, then turn it another 90 degrees. These
are strech bolts. You need to measure the shank of the old ones before
re-using them to see if they're in tolerance or not. I just bought new bolts
from Rusty.

My experience is that acetone does not mix with Mobil 1 ATF - I just shake
it got get the globs as small as possible, then squirt on liberally. I only
mix what I need for the job at hand, and use it all.

I think it's 45 Nm first torque. 26! bolts total.

Yes, unless you have a very-well sealed container. I mix it as needed.
Roughly 50:50; the ratio doesn't seem to be all that important.

[MBZ] My afternoon working on MB's

2011-07-03 Thread Max Dillon
Spent the afternoon working on my '95 E300 for a bit (fixed the other rear
window using the 210 slider previously discussed) and then I dove into
removing the head on my '87.

I soaked the exhaust nuts/bolts again (had soaked them all with PB Blaster a
week or so ago) prior to starting on the '95 window, and when I returned
they came off like butter. PB Blaster is really nice stuff, when you can
give it time to work.

So, exhaust came off, pulled turbo drain tube, finally wiggled the turbo
supply oil line out of the block. It is time to loosen the head bolts!

I'd ordered the Hazet bit from Rusty for the head bolts (triple square
10mm), and it was really nice to have. Didn't need it for all the bolts,
but for the seven buried under the cam bearings it was very nice. Those
head bolts are TIGHT! Needed the breaker bar to get them all loose.
Interestingly, one bolt each at #1 and #6 cylinders was dry, the rest were
well oiled. I thought all of them were supposed to be oiled prior to
installation? All came out without drama.

Time to lift the head off! Realized I needed to take loose the ATF dip
stick tube, and the exhaust fought me some more, but I finally had it lifted
free. The replacement fire log for the original cat was a tight fit, and
the turbo support wanted to hang up in a coolant line, but I got it out.
Tore up the fiberglass insulation pretty good, need to address that.

I'm a total novice, this is my first head removal, so I may not be able to
read the signs, but the head gasket looks just fine to me. No evidence of
coolant or oil blow out anywhere. However, there is cracking between
every single intake and exhaust valve seat. #6 is the worst, followed by
#4.

Upper chain guide needs to be replaced - small hole in it, and worn. How
hard to do the tensioner chain guide while I'm this far into it?

My new head is still at the shop, but probably ready to be picked up, so
maybe I'll have some time in a few weeks to start putting it all back
together.
