Re: [MBZ] New Vibrations 190D - motor mount??
The jolt from the rear-end crash could easily cause them to fail if they were old. However, they do just croak suddenly whenever the rubber cracks. [MBZ] New Vibrations 190D - motor mount??
For those who are annoyed by questions that make you go duh please disregard: Recently, our 87 190D has developed a major engine-related vibration. Makes vibration noises from the interior parts never heard before. The thing is suddenly an annoying, vibrating, noisy, cheap-sounding car. Especially bad just upon startup (when of course the engine is a little bit rough-running for a few seconds). Motor mount/s? Didn't happen right away after the accident - wife says it started a couple weeks later. I opened the driver's door during the vibration to see if maybe the car's frame was bent enough to be making the door rub. But thankfully, nope. That sounds like what happened on my 1981 300SD when the motor mounts went bad. It got worse quickly and got quite loud until replaced. Re: [MBZ] New Vibrations 190D - motor mount??
Take a peek at the engine mounts. They should stand free for the frame by an inch or so (measured from the bottom of the bell of the top metal part) and the steel insert should be visible. If not, or if they sound hollow when tapped, they are shot. These are gel filled mounts, containing a spring and a plate with a small gap around it to dampen vibration. When the gel leaks out from cracked rubber, the engine is suspended on undamped springs and will shake like crazy at all speeds. Another clue is shutoff behavior -- if the engine just stops with very little noise or vibration, the mounts are good. When they go bad, it thumps when you shut it off. Not a terrible repair, although you do need to jack and support the front end and jack up the engine. On the 190 without a turbo, you can reach both sides pretty easily. A pain on turbo models as the turbo is directly over the top bolt. One 17mm bolt on top, one 8mm allen bolt on the bottom -- loosen, jack engine to get space, remove bolts and mount, then jack up another couple inches to get the new one in. Start both bolts (don't drop the bottom one, it can roll into the frame on the w124, and I assume on the W201, and it's REAL pain to get out). Lower engine onto mount and tighten up. Don't for get the heat shields on top and to take the fan shroud loose FIRST -- it will also need to be adjusted after you put new mounts in. Would cracked rubber likely come from a minor crash, or would that only happen if they were about to fail anyway?
