[MBZ] O.T. Acura Lifter Tapping When Cold
SO.the wife's '87 Acura Legend (189K Miles) has developed a lifter tapping when the engine is cold. When it comes off the cold peg, it goes away. The oil is fresh and the level is SAT. The dudes on the Acura forum said, among many things, to use the Auto RX or Sea Foam in the oil to clear out the we, small oil passages. Sound reasonable? Bob R. Re: [MBZ] O.T. Acura Lifter Tapping When Cold
More often than not, a cold lifter noise that goes away when the engine warms up is caused by wear can't be fixed by any additives. I would not be too concerned as long as the noise goes away when the car warms up. This is not the same as lifter noise on start-up that goes away right after your oil pressure builds up. This type of noise can also be caused by wear or by a faulty oil pump check valve or in the case of a late 80's or newer MB diesel, a hardened or missing O-ring on the stem that's attached to the oil filter cover. Have used both. Auto-rx works better than Seafoam. Starting the flush stage for the Auto-rx treatment when the weather breaks. Bob, The next time you go to change the oil, put a quart of diesel in the oil and run the engine at idle for 10-15 min. Then change as usual. I got rid of a tapping on an old Dodge that way.
