Let me suggest a cordless one.
Great for taking to the junk yard to remove those things where the bolts
are too rusted. Around here they won't let you bring in a torch but I
don't think they object to the saws.

I would like to suggest, from experience, the Harbor Fright, made by the
lowest bidder in China, metal cutting saw blades are absolute crap. If you
wish to have success in cutting metal, spend the extra for good quality
bi-metal cutting blades. You will be glad you did.

The disposable saw however, seems to be worth the money, plus, Harbor
Fright now has a warranty they stand behind nicely.

I got a set last summer but the Ox tank is empty and I have not had it
filled yet (or swapped - whatever they do here). Will have to do so once
the weather warms a bit. Both tanks, gauges etc on a roller cart. Only
the cutting torch though. No welding tips but that should not be hard to
rectify. The smaller tanks - two foot high or so. Owned tanks though so
no rental cost. I have rarely played with such a thing. My father had a
set when I was younger and silly me let them be sold after he died. He
owned the Ac tank - the bigger one but they would not sell the bigger Ox
tank so it was leased. Should have kept the set.

[MBZ] OM603 head immersion test

2014-03-04 Thread Max Dillon
So my plan is to cut a barrel in half and borrow a propane burner from a
friend, and use that to make an immersion tank that I can heat to 80 Deg C
or more. Need to get over the Hazard Fraught to buy a grinder and some
cut-off wheels, and a set of safety goggles, and cut up a barrel that has
been rusting away under my back porch.

I'm going to make some rubber rings from old inner tube to put under each
exhaust valve, so the spring will hold the valve/rubber/seat sandwhich to
make an air-tight seal. Air might leak from the exhaust manifold/head
joint, may have to use some sealant of some kind there if it does leak.

Next rig a shrader valve to the end of the exhaust manifold, and pressurize
with 15 lbs, then dunk the whole thing into the hot tank and see if I get
any air passing from the exhaust side and then out of the cooling passages.

What are the odds that there is a crack in a pre-chamber which is allowing
exhaust gas to get into the cooling passages?

Thanks,
Max

Suggest instead, you scribe a line on the barrel and use a jig saw with
metal cutting blades. The barrel is at best 18 gage sheet metal so the
blade will cut it quickly and easily. Let the saw do the work and don't
crowd the blade, they will last much longer. If you have a sawsal same
result.

To start the cut, drill a hole [in the scrap side of the cut] that will
allow entry of the blade.

Much more controlled than abrasive grinder cut, less mess, and less risk to
injury..
Wipe the edges with a file after to cure any sharp bits that will eat you
in use of the new 1/2 barrel..

To hold the barrel steady while cutting use a piece of 2x4 under each side
which keeps it from rolling away from you while cutting.

To scribe the cut line.. set the barrel upright and use a piece of
cardboard the height you want your new barrel, about 12 inches across..
hold it against the barrel and walk it around while making a mark with a
sharpie.

HTH,

Grant...
