I know the Universal Service Fund started in the 30s, maybe the Act of 1934?
But I couldn't tell if there were any free phones back then, or if the fund was
used to run wire to areas where it wasn't economically feasible, making the
possibility of signing up for phone service universal.

I have more sympathy for the older folks who are finding it difficult to
manage on fixed incomes (maybe because I may not be too far from that
myself).
An example, is that I built my garage in 1985 for about $5K. Now I am
building a garden shed that is a fraction of the size of the garage and
does not have a concrete floor and I am thinking it will cost $2500.
If prices continue to rise, I may not be able to afford to maintain my
home. I do most work myself but it will become more difficult as I age -
and dangerous - since it is a 2 storey.

I have little sympathy for the young folks who do not seem willing to work.

Free phone service for the poor was established by the 1996 Telecommunications
Act, so we should be calling them Clinton Phones.
Since Tracfone started offering Lifeline services around 9 years ago, free
gubbermint cell phones have soared in popularity, with the numbers skyrocketing
after the 2008 economic crash.
A lot of people actually think the free cell phones were The Bummer's idea.

Lower taxes means less burden on both workers and businesses. That directly
equates to more business orders placed, more goods sold, and more work
hours paid for to produce those goods, thus, more wages paid.

Each time a dollar is spent, it pays a tax. Spend more dollars, collect
more taxes.

If you tax a dollar at 90% and it only gets spent one time.. you collect 90
cents.
Spending produces a taxable event so "people" stop spending, banks stop
loaning, and industry moves out of the country to places where they don't
have to deal with regulation and confiscatory taxes. Like China, India,
Mexico, etc etc..

If you tax a dollar at 5% and both industry and labor spends that dollar
and keeps circulating it, which is what happens when a fair tax rate is
used, like back in "1952", the total taxes collected are exponentially
higher. Dollars stay on the move, creating "taxable events".

To gain perspective, an example. In May of 2016, every cargo ship in the

which tracks every ship in the world, you can look it up.. They were all

were at capacity, [capacity defined by willingness to buy and warehouse
unsold goods] and companies that bought goods from those warehouses simply

Simple fact... if the government taxed every worker at 100% of annual
income, it would only run the government, at it's present rate of spending,
for about 5 days.
We don't need more taxes.. we need more restraint on those doing the
spending, as a starting point.

How about this line I heard.
The "recovery" is being funded by consumer spending, not business spending.

Even Bill Clinton, when visiting in Japan and confronted with a sluggish

It's called the Laffer curve. Art Laffer was an economist who worked for
Reagan, among others. Like supply and demand curves, it's conceptually a sound

But if the government took 100% of my earnings, I'd stop working entirely (i.e.
zero tax revenue). That's the basis of the Laffer curve.

Actually, lowering taxes across the board produces more tax revenue. I
know, heads are spinning at that comment. Follow along for just a bit.

Lower taxes means less burden on both workers and businesses. That
directly

equates to more business orders placed, more goods sold, and more work
hours paid for to produce those goods, thus, more wages paid.

Each time a dollar is spent, it pays a tax. Spend more dollars, collect
more taxes.

If you tax a dollar at 90% and it only gets spent one time.. you
collect 90

In May of 2016, every cargo ship in the
world was setting in port, or at anchor, or empty. There is a web site
which tracks every ship in the world, you can look it up.. They were all
setting because factories had not received sufficient orders for the
previous months to fill them. Warehouses that would receive their loads
were at capacity, [capacity defined by willingness to buy and warehouse
unsold goods] and companies that bought goods from those warehouses simply
were not buying... because people were either broke or holding what ever
funds they had, rather than buy more goods..

Simple fact... if the government taxed every worker at 100% of annual
income, it would only run the government, at it's present rate of
spending,

for about 5 days.
We don't need more taxes.. we need more restraint on those doing the
spending, as a starting point.

The liberal Heaven of Seattle has become a homeless encampment in the
last 8 years. These folks are taking over the public rights of way,
highway verges, roundabouts, sidewalks, any space they can find to set
up camp. The population of unemployed in the Soviet Socialist Republic
of Seattle has boomed under O’bummer. Bush was not able to produce
enough of this population over an 8 year period. The homeless under
his rule took up park benches, and clogged shelters, but nothing like
the thousands living in tents and what look like refugee camps.

Under the Evil Queen, I am sure there will be even more dispossessed
and an even greater decline in national infrastructure. Roving bands
of pan handlers will swarm along pot holed roadways, pleading for
handouts that the goobermint is no longer capable of producing. The
third world will have taken hold of America and we will all have to
move to Canada for the health care and not because we just can not
stand the idiot residing in the festering swamp along the Potomac.

It's due to the "gun show loophole." The bangers go to the gun shows in
Chiraq and buy all their guns under this "loophole." Mayor Rahm is
devoting all his energy to closing this "loophole" but needs more money
to be successful.

But not to worry about the deceased, they will vote D in November!

I think your A answer is wrong, twenty-five years ago, the estimated
cumulative tax on the average grocery store food item was about 75%,
counting all the taxes starting with the property tax on the land the
farmer used, to all the taxes at each stage of the chain that the crop
went through, to the final sales tax paid at the register. The
taxation power alone is unbelievable, and the effect is immensely
negative, on both prosperity and liberty.

That is not at all what I said. I gave you facts, and an opportunity
to answer your question, which I believed was a legitimate request.
You don't have to seek answers, but I will not spoon feed you.

A: The gooberment interferes with all parts of the economy, and and
has a huge influence on the prosperity, or lack thereof, of the
citizenry. This is done by taxes, yes, but more so by regulatory
burdens. There is no business, small or large that does not have a
huge regulatory burden. Wanna make some dog treats? You would not
BELIEVE the regulatory burden. Angie wanna make and sell some
cookies? Same thing, but actually, not as bad. Wanna make and sell
some gizmo for lanterns or snowmobiles? Endless regulatory burden,
and IF you happen to be lucky enough to MAKE some money, Uncle is
there with his hand out. Over 15% off the top for SS, then medicare
etc., then state and fed income tax, sales tax, tax and tax,
bummercare tax, Workmen's comp, and mountains of regulation. That
chokes more businesses than anything else. You will be looking at
40% to 65% off the top of your gross sales for taxes alone.

B: It is big, but it responds to certain things. The Tax cuts done
by JFK sparked huge growth. When RR did the same thing, and even
bigger, longer period of growth occurred, lasting through most of the
W period. The economy does not care if the tax is cut by D or R. It
will grow. The economy does not care if D or R raise taxes. Either
way, the economy shrinks.

C: No comment

D: There are only 2 or 3 ways out from where we are. 1. Financial
collapse, depression. 2. Number one plus revolution. 3 growth,
spurred and started by cutting the regulatory burden and the tax
burden. We can GROW out of the mess we are in, but it will take bold
tax and regulatory burden reforms.

The actual labor component of most products is in the single digit %
range. (5-9% of gross receipts) Exceptions are food service, retail
bakery and other labor intensive businesses. Those typically run 30%
to 40% of gross receipts.

So to paraphrase:
RR and the Republican congress in '94 gave us 6 fold growth, Clinton

Obama clearly gave us only 2 fold growth although half of the last 16
years had GW Bush and a Republican congress that clearly were doing
something awesome but Obama is such a terrible guy that doesn't call
his mother or wipe his behind properly that he limited our growth.

See on the other hand I think:
A. Government actually has very little to do with the economy
B. The economy is a big crazy thing that nobody really understands and
when somebody says they do they're probably selling something.
C. The economy is NOT rational for the simple reason that people are
not rational and will cut their own throat to make a buck.

It is not a fixed sum game. I'll take a stab at explaining.

In 1980, when RR was elected, the GDP was about 1.6 trillion per
quarter. The gooberment spent about 325 Billion of this amount. (or
about 20%)

In 2000, when W was elected, The GDP was about 8.9 trillion per
quarter. The gooberment spent 1.5 trillion of this. (or about 16%)
http://www.bea.gov/iTable/iTable.cfm?ReqID=9=1#reqid=9=3=1&903=10

So in the span of 20 years, the US economy grew roughly 6 fold. This
growth was the result of the RR policies, and the "contract with
America" of 1994.

in 2016, the GDP is roughly 16.5 trillion per quarter. The goobermnt
spent about 2.9 billion of this. (or about 17%)
http://www.bea.gov/iTable/iTable.cfm?ReqID=9=1#reqid=9=3=1&903=6
so, in the last 16 years, rather than growing 5 fold, the economy has
been choked, and grew only 2 fold.

Here are the questions for you to answer: (Yep it is homework)

in 2016, the GDP is roughly 16.5 trillion per quarter. The goobermnt

1. What is the current national debt?
2. What would the quarterly GDP be in 2016, if the GDP had grown at the
rate of 6 fold in 20 years?
3. What would the gooberment's share of that be, if we limited the
goobermnt to 17% of the GDP (per quarter)?
4. How many years would it take to pay off the national debt if the
difference between the actual gooberment expenditures and the amount the
goobermnt would have taken in was applied to reduce the national debt?

5. If that difference were applied to Social Insecurity, where the
average payment is now $1200/mo, (rather an applied to paying down the
national debt) what would the average monthly payment be now?

I await answers from the group.

As you research and determine answers to these 5 simple questions, it
will become obvious how much damage has been done in the last 8/16 years.

Again - right on! There might be a difference though, the R's spend OUR
money to increase the already rich, who then shovel it off the off-shore
hidden accounts (no, trickle down doesn't happen, never has). The D's say
they are spending OUR money to help the poor - keep them from stealing to

Re: [MBZ] OT: political signs

2016-08-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I just had kinda a sideways thought since this is not the first time somebody
on the list has used the "its not a zero sum game" argument.
How come when a Republican wants to cut taxes and spend money its "not a zero
sum game" but when a Democrat wants to spend money they're a "tax and spend
liberal"? If government spending makes more money isn't it always good?
Both parties spend more money, they say they don't but their actions refute
that.

Re: [MBZ] OT: political signs

2016-08-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
So to paraphrase:
RR and the Republican congress in '94 gave us 6 fold growth, Clinton and Carter
couldn't possibly have had anything to do with it.
Obama clearly gave us only 2 fold growth although half of the last 16 years had
GW Bush and a Republican congress that clearly were doing something awesome but
Obama is such a terrible guy that doesn't call his mother or wipe his behind
properly that he limited our growth.
See on the other hand I think:
A. Government actually has very little to do with the economy
B. The economy is a big crazy thing that nobody really understands and when
somebody says they do they're probably selling something.
C. The economy is NOT rational for the simple reason that people are not
rational and will cut their own throat to make a buck.

BTW did you notice I'm not a Hillary supporter?
Something I find interesting in some folks who support either Hillary or Trump
is that they only listen to part of every sentence. Once they hear you're not
supporting their candidate they stop listening and start formulating their next
sentence. Politics has become talking, not discussion. For discussion you have

Probably would have anyway. It had 40% support from Dems and 97% support from
Republicans.
That says to me a House of 80% Dems and 20% Rs would have been pretty evenly
split. Even I thought we needed to finish what GHWB left undone there. But
mostly, we managed to prove that not invading Iraq was one of the smarter things
GHWB did. (and not telling Saddam "if you mess with Kuwait, we'll kick your ass
into the Dark Ages" in clear and convincing language was still one of the dumber
things from the GHWB administration)

still supporting Hillary have their heads so far up their butts that they
are looking out through their ears. If the establishment wants that POS
Paul Ryan more than Trump, then the establishment republicans need to be
dumped. Ryan is a POS in the mold of Boehner. Hillary is just a plain
liar and a crook. If women want a female president, then at least pick a
good female. The polls again are like statistics, you choose the sample

Re: [MBZ] OT: political signs, taking the measure

2016-08-08 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Back when American tool companies made stuff in USA, I always preferred Lufkin
tapes to Stanley Powerlock. The rocker switch lock on the Lufkin didn't make the
blade creep back 1/8", and the Lufkin had a rubber bumper pad where the blade
hook hit upon retracting.
The ones I bought in the 1980s looked like this:
http://www.lufkintool.com/tapes/tape-measures/lufkin-hv420-1-x-20-hi-viz-r-orange-power-return-tape-measure.html

Lufkin now has 1 3/16" tapes, stand erect to 10' instead of 7', but I can see
where that English tape has some advantages too:

For the conspiracy crowd….

Trump is being bought by H->. She needed a complete disaster to be able to be
seen as a viable candidate. With Trump, the road to election is paved. He was
not ever a real GOP sort. Trump cozied up to H-> and the perv for years.
There must be a deal they struck to pay him to run and the DNC is playing
along. See how they screwed over Bernie? The underlings went around screwing
over the other GOP dudes so that Trump would be the only one left at the end of
the day

Re: [MBZ] OT: political signs

2016-08-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I think Hillary has a plan where the numbers have a reasonable chance to add
up, its pie in the sky of course but rooted in reality. Trump basically has no
plan since three of our economies couldn't make it work.
The thing the democrats seem to see better than the Republicans is that you
can't "start over" because you can't STOP. This is not auto mechanics, its
heart surgery, you have to do it while the patient is alive. Thats my argument
against the repeated "repeal Obamacare" votes, other than wasting time you
can't repeal and replace because you need to structure first. I would accept
"incremental modification" which is the only way it could possibly have a hope
of working but of course that doesn't work in sound bites...
Regulation and stupid tax policy comes from both sides. When you get right down
to it the two parties (the parties mind you, ignoring the candidates) differ
only in what exactly they want to screw up...
Grid-lock is actually what we need, the government that governs best governs
least. If we'd had an R congress in 2008 we wouldn't have Obamacare. If we'd
had a D congress in 2003 we might not have gone into Iraq. Its when one party
is in control that things go badly...

Curt, do you think Hillary's plan (more of Obama's plan) will somehow work this
time, because   Yes Trump is playing on fear, which is very real for a big
part of the population.  Trump didn't create that fear, but he certainly has
figured out how to tap into it.  Hillary is attempting to tap into fear as
well, fear of Trump.

Trump (as a businessman) should understand (I'm hoping) that the real key is to
get the economy fired up and rolling again, which will generate tax revenues to
fund his plan (which we all know is typical campaign pie-in-the-sky, as general
and attractive-sounding as possible to his base).  Regulation and really stupid
tax policy, which has been building for decades, are finally about to choke the
country into bankruptcy.  Medicare and SS cannot be saved without getting the
economy going, and I'll pick anyone over Hillary to see if they can do better
than just picking up where Obama left off.  Remember that the house will
probably stay Republican, so I think we'll just get continued grid-lock from
WDC under Hillary.

I'm always surprised when people I consider intelligent are Trump supporters.
My dad for instance is big on Trump. My mother only supports him because she
hates Hillary. I contend that a vote for somebody you don't like is throwing
your vote away.
It just occurred to me that when I buy electronics I ask my dad what he thinks
and do exactly the opposite. He's got a knack for picking what will be the
dustbin technology "You don't want a CD player, digital audio tape is the next
big thing!"Same was true when I got my first apartment, landlord offered to
sell it to me for $15k which would have been less than my rent. Dad said no and
I didn't, 7 years later when we moved out they were selling (actually selling
mind you) for $35k.
Dad has a knack for picking losers and he's chosen Trump...

Curt, I hate to break it to you, but all white people aren't bigots and
racists. I know that line fits the liberal media mold and allows so many to
"play the race card". I vote based upon what I believe, has nothing to do with
racism or bigotry, and I hope you do the same. Trump is merely stating that the

Regards political signs, those coroplast signs make excellent bases for
lots of things -- under the car for sliding around (duct tape a few
together), bases under things (waterproof, somewhat padding), quick
boxes with some zip ties, liners for things, etc. I have repurposed them
with a bit of white paint and then whatever message you want to present.

The scalawags have some urge to place these things all over my road, so
I collect them up and usually get a good pile. The wires make good
plant props. Some of the scalawags have gone cheap with these plastic
bags over a wire frame, the bags actually make OK small trash bags and
the wire frames are useful for random shop things.

them, but it is a UK company called Fisco apparently. I guess Dawn
does not like Big Johnsons. Anyway I found some similar items for
sale in the UK that they will ship for free to the USA (but the
company has some sort of USA ebay listing, I don't know how that
works), so I bought some. The last one I bought was maybe 6 or 7
years ago, and it is still working OK but getting a little ragged. I
use it constantly. These are by far the best tapes I have ever used,
and have a belt clip that is very easy to use.

These things are great, I should look into importing them and selling
them on-line or somehow.

Curt, I hate to break it to you, but all white people aren't bigots and
racists. I know that line fits the liberal media mold and allows so many to
"play the race card". I vote based upon what I believe, has nothing to do with
racism or bigotry, and I hope you do the same. Trump is merely stating that the
average taxpayer, not having a job, not having good healthcare, etc., because
of the state of affairs in the current USA, is pissed off. If you have a good
job, live in a nice neighborhood, etc, then you probably aren't pissed off, but
a lot of people don't have thata lot of people of multiple colors I might
add.

I had a Stanley 30' x 1" tape that was great! I left it for my friend
the dozer op to use a few years ago because he was trying to level a
building pad without a tape. He left it lay on a window sill, and some
scumbag lifted it. I still miss that one.Now I just use the HF
freebies.. They are adequate, but won't do some things the 1" Stanley
could do.

Try to get any of those lies to court - it hasn't happened for 40
years, it's not gonna happen today. Is the data suspect? Why is the
proof of lies sooo hard to get? Have there been court appearances?
