Re: [MBZ] OT - Mesh WiFi Networks

2018-01-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I have no complaints about the quality or functionality of NetGear’s products,
I just don’t like the fact that stuff seems to become legacy hardware in a far
shorter time period than other vendors.

It did affect my NAS, as I bonded the two NICs using the firmware options, and
there’s no way to “unbond” them because they stopped supporting the device
shortly after adding the option. It was supposed to be a part of the option
but they dropped support before they finished development.

So now I have a NAS with bonded NICs that I can’t separate.

I tried Netgear after several failures of other brands, and the Netgear has
lasted the longest here. YMMV. I do get updates for the Netgear stuff, even
though there are newer models of the hardware. I have four pieces now - in
four different buildings, all on the same network - working great (knocking
on wood). Two of the routers have USB sticks stuck in them for shared
storage - works fine.

I’ve had a couple of their routers, which have worked fairly well. However,
they seem to have a pretty short development cycle when then bring out new
products. When this happens, the old ones get kicked to the curb and receive no
updates.

If I buy a $150 router as new I expect it to be supported for more than a year
after I purchase it. I also have a NAS they made and the same issue occurred.
That was a fairly expensive purchase for what is now effectively a very
expensive doorstop.

People used to buy Netgear stuff on sale at Staples, sometimes with rebates,
and then resell them on Amazon.
If they didn't appear to be authorized vendors, Netgear would send them
threats, accusing them of selling counterfeit goods. In some cases suing them
for selling counterfeit goods when in fact the goods in question were genuine.
Then Netgear switched their claim to 'you listed them as New, but only

When I heard about that, I figured that if Netgear is going to sue me for

Not mesh, but I _really_ like all of the Ubiquity hardware I've
used. Put in a UniFi "LR" (long range) and I would expect you to
have good coverage over the whole house. And if one won't do it,
run wires to two of them an they can "share" an ESSID and
seamlessly switch. Also supports dual ESSID so one can be setup
as "guest" access. It's more trouble to setup as it is managed via
a server, but that isn't needed for runtime unless you need to do
fancy stuff.

Here is a link to one of them. There are others to choose from too:

Exactly. That’s why I’m looking at mesh. If I had a way to get ethernet to the
back of the house I would just put another access point in. Unfortunately, the
pitch of the roof prevents me from getting back there through the attic space,
so that’s not an option.

The difference between extenders and mesh is that with mesh you (theoretically)
do not lose bandwidth. The mesh system uses an additional 5 GHz band to
communicate between the base unit and any satellites.

Thanks, Don.

I can do a range extender/bridge with hardware I currently have. I’m looking
at a mesh network so I can have consistent coverage around the house without
any dogs on bandwidth or speed, which a bridge would do.

Greg - good info on the Orbi. My previous experiences with Netgear haven’t
been great, but it comes in as far as reviews just below the Eero, so they must
be doing something right.

Thanks!

[MBZ] OT - Mesh WiFi Networks

2018-01-04 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Anyone here done a mesh wifi network in their house with an Eero or similar
hardware?

I’m giving it some thought as a replacement for the dual band wifi I currently
run that just barely covers the whole house.
