Yeah that is my approach as well. Once I feel that there is more or
less straight water left in the system, I'll add half the capacity of
undiluted coolant, then top off with water. Resulting in a 50:50 mix.

That's what I did. I usually drain as completely as possible, fill with tap
water, drive for a short while with the heater on, cool, drain and refill
again, drive, cool and drain.

Sort of a "lather, rinse, repeat" thing.

I'll also refill with straight AF and check the concentration, since I know
there will be a fair amount of water left in the system. Of course, in this
climate you don't have to worry about freezing, but I would be a little more
careful about it if I was north of the Mason-Dixon Line.

One other thing I noticed... when you drain the system from the radiator
petcock, you get about 1 gallon out; the cooling system capacity is 6
quarts, so there's still 2 quarts left in there "somewhere."

Meaning if you want to do a really complete change of coolant, you'll
need to do a few clean-water fill/drain cycles to get most of the old
coolant out.

According to wikipedia in 2004 Ford switched over to design based on the
Mazda MZR engine for its I4 engines. These were given the name Duratec
and were made with varying displacements including the 2.3.

The Zetec line I think was never bigger than a 2.0l except the diesel
Zetec TDCi went up to 2.4l. Of course we never saw the diesel version
in the states.

Mine are a 2004 ZTW wagon and a 2005 ZX5.

Well nothing is ever *easy* is it?

I drained the system, filled with water to flush, and warmed up the
engine. Once it had reached operating temp I turned it off and
discovered that the thermostat gasket leaks under pressure. That would
explain the slow coolant loss I've observed on this car in recent
months.

So, off to FLAPS to get a gasket. Wondering about the possibility that
the housing is warped (it looks to be plastic).

Should I get a new thermostat as well, or leave the old one as it seems

Re: [MBZ] OT Ford Focus coolant change

2012-08-19 Thread Dan Penoff
Yup.

Pretty straightforward as far as I found. Drain the radiator from the bottom
drain (plastic - ugh! flush with clear water several times and then refill with
the proper Ford gold coolant.

I never had a problem with air pockets or overheating. This has been done on
both of my Focuses by me without any issues.

[MBZ] OT Ford Focus coolant change

2012-08-19 Thread Allan Streib
Want to change out the coolant in our '03 Focus before winter. I've
found some postings that say it's a simple drain/fill operation, others
talk about extreme difficulty getting air purged and subsequent random
overheating.

Any Focus owners (Dan?) done this?

Re: [MBZ] OT: Ford Focus rough/vibrating idle

2012-05-18 Thread Allan Streib
Tonight I worked on the idea that the mounts were not bolted down in the
correct position (the plates that bolt to the chassis have a bit of slop
built in, not sure why, I guess so they don't have to build the chassis
to close tolerances).

I loosened all the bolts, started the engine, put it in drive, reverse,
then back into neutral. Gave it a bit of gas in each position. The
engine did move around a bit.

Bolted it back down where it had settled, and I can't say that I can
tell a lot of difference in the vibrations.

Looking at the setup, I'm not convinced the mounts are responsible. I
think the old ones were tired, because replacing them resulted in
improvement, but not elimination of the vibrations.

One of the forum posts described finding the timing being off. The
timing belt on this engine is past-due for replacement. I wonder if it
has gotten stretched enough to jump a tooth? Wrong timing could cause a
rough idle.

2012-05-17 Thread Allan Streib
Rusty, I did check your site before I went to Rockauto, but the parts I
wanted came up as unavailable.

I believe I've eliminated the EGR valve as a culprit, though it looks
pretty rough/corroded externally. If I disconnect the vacuum, the idle
does not change; if I apply vacuum at idle the engine immediately
stumbles and dies.

I'll try loosening the mount bolts and sliding the engine around a
little to see if I can get an improvement. Might try loosening all the
bolts a bit and starting the engine, to see if it will "settle" where it
wants to be.

One of the other posts in one of the threads I linked to mentioned positioning
of the passenger side mount also. When I did the alternator on SIL Focus, I
took that mount loose for clearance. It is in a kind of slot IIRC. If nothing
else, you now have two pretty good forums to peruse for Focus answers.

While it is always more expensive, I tend to stick with OEM rubber parts after
seeing a comparison of OEM vs. non-OEM windshield seals. Lots of little details
can get left out by the aftermarket folks, and the difference in cost is pretty
insignificant when you have to replace the part for lack of performance or
premature failure.

I know the passenger side motor mount is about the same price between the
dealer and aftermarket, as I looked at them a few months ago for the
youngster's car.

I couldn't find the dogbone part anywhere, nor could I identify it on Ford's
parts site.

The rear mount (torque mount, it's called) apparently can collect small
rocks and other debris which will then cause more vibration to be
transmitted. I replace mine (very easy to do) but didn't note any
debris trapped in the old one, and it didn't make a big difference.

Changing the two mounts under the hood (transmission/left side and
motor/right side did result in improvement, but not elimination, of the
vibration. Also a pretty easy job. I did use aftermarket Chinese
mounts from Rockauto though, so maybe I need to try genuine Ford.

Also wondering if it might resonance in the exhaust system for some
reason. Not sure why that would develop though.

[MBZ] OT: Ford Focus rough/vibrating idle

2012-05-16 Thread Allan Streib
2003 Focus, DOHC Zetec engine, 150K miles. Has developed a rough idle,
actually more like a low frequency vibration that is more apparent
inside the car than out.

I've changed all the motor mounts, which reduced the interior sensation
from almost a buzzing to a less objectionable vibration.

Recently changed spark plugs. That didn't make any noticeable
difference in anything.

Tried unplugging and capping vacuum line to EGR valve, no change (though
that doesn't eliminate the possibility of a stuck valve, I guess).

MAF sensor looks clean (but have not tested it electrically). However
that doesn't have much to do with idle does it?

Only filter that is not new/recent is fuel... but if that was restricted
I'd have problems at speed more than at idle wouldn't I?

No apparent leaks, tonight I spritzed carb cleaner in all likely areas
and the idle didn't change at all.

Otherwise it seems to run well. Check engine light is not on. Starts
easily, has good power.

Other ideas?

Re: [MBZ] OT - Ford Focus Engine Mounts

2011-10-17 Thread Dan Penoff
Ah-ha!

Sounds like the lower mount, probably a "dog bone", may be the culprit. Just
drove the boy's car this morning, and it rattles like a box of rocks when you
hit a bump. The noise comes from the driver's side forward of the footwell.

I know it's not the sway bar links, as we replaced those when we bought the car
last year.

If you haven't already seen it, there is a really good Ford Focus forum I have
used since we bought these two Focii. Very active, lots of good info.

Been too busy getting moved to do any research - later this week, maybe.

Thanks!

Yes. Have not done them yet. I did find a summary of the job online
somewhere, and it didn't sound bad. Basically slightly raise/support
the engine, unbolt old mount, bolt on new. This was for the passenger
side mount. There's got to be at least one more on the
transmission/driver's side, but I have not found much info on that.

There is also a "anti roll" mount at the bottom center, between engine
and firewall. This apparently can pick up rocks or other debris and
then you get a lot of vibration. I found a TSB on this linked at the
Rock Auto website when I was looking up the motor mounts.

We're not driving the Focus much right now so it's not been a high
priority.

Re: [MBZ] OT Ford Focus

2009-06-04 Thread Curt Raymond
I had 2 in the last 9 months as rentals. I *think* you need to evaluate each
specific example on its own rights I don't think you can generalize.
The first one was a real base model, the only options were AC, auto windows and
the automatic.
I hated it. Rattly, cheap feeling, buzzy on the highway.

The second was up optioned, including satellite radio. I liked it a lot.
Quieter on the highway, I don't know if it had a bigger engine or what but it
seemed more powerful.

In neither case did I have a chance to do a lot of driving, just the run from
the Long Beach airport to Burbank, a little running around Burbank and then
back to Long Beach.

I will tell you this time last year I had a Hyundai Elantra which I really
liked, I think its about the same class as the Focus. Much nicer car than the
Focus in just about every way although the one I had must have been close to
the top of the line including a sunroof.

The last Civic I drove was in 2002 or thereabouts. I liked it but the seats
were a little small for my taste, nothing I couldn't live with though. Honda
people tend to be rabid Honda lovers and Honda dealers appear to go the extra
mile to make the owners happy. Don't expect any fantastic deals on a new one
though.

Hey all,

Below, I'm pasting in what I wrote in the thread about our 190D starting to
burn oil.

I'm hoping to get any input on newer, and the new Ford Focus.

We have had a 96 or so Civic and wonder how the new ones are too.

But price-wise we would probably not buy a new Civic.

Any experience with the Focus among the group?

Or any other suggestions for a newer compact with good fuel mileage?

Wife test drove, among others today, a Honda Fit. I was greatly
disappointed
to find that it comes with rear drum brakes. I thought we'd be past
that by
now. Oh, and if you want alloy wheels, get ready to shell out over
$1100 for

them.

Drum brakes have some advantages, but racing ain't one of 'em.
Alloys? You have forgotten what new car world is like, it seems.

I'd say just keep flogging the 190D and see what happens. Could
it be valve stem seals? If yours is like mine it has a vacuum-
inducing flap in the intake that's there to 'help' the EGR do
its job, so I suppose that (unmolested) it's able to pull more
oil past shot seals than the usual vintage diesel we're all
familiar with. This is just a guess.

Re: [MBZ] OT Ford Focus

2009-06-03 Thread Allan Streib
We have an '04 Focus, mostly trouble free so far at 110K miles. Had to
charge the AC last week, and we did have one problem with the
transmission, at right around 100K miles, it would not shift properly
unless you disabled overdrive (pushbutton on the shifter). Turned out
to be a stuck valve, the repair was not expensive and that was at the
dealer. I had probably let the fluid go to long without changing.

I think the current generation Focus is a new revision of the chassis,
but I'd buy another one (used, most likely, though if you've got the
money you can probably get a deal on a new one these days). Maybe get
one with a manual trans if you like 'em.

One other issue, the alloy wheels seem a little weak, prone to bending
if you hit anything too hard.

We have been looking at Civics, and lusting after a new Insight.

Now we got advice to look into a new Ford Focus - especially in the current
auto market.

Of course, I also was thinking about fixing the engine and keeping the 190,
because we love it and already own it. And it's a classic (in my mind) and

2008-12-29 Thread Allan Streib
Took it in to the dealer, just no time to mess with it. MIL was on so
something was wrong.

They determined it was a bad solenoid, replaced and new fluid and filter
for $350. A bit of a pinch but keeps me off the garage floor for a
weekend.

They did say there was still some "pump noise" and the transmission may
be closer than not to the end of its life (110 K miles, seems low but
then again I'm guilty of pushing the fluid change intervals too far on
that car).

I wonder if Mobil-1 ATF is good in Ford transmissions?

If and when the time comes, anyone know if used transmissions from
places like car-part.com tend to be worth messing with?

Further diagnosed the problem, it's limited to the "overdrive."  If I
disable that with the pushbutton on the shifter, all is well.

Hoping it's something minor but dreading the call from the shop: "yew
