Also consider the source, and the likely load. Tens of thousands of
almost-synced viewers? More? Content sourcing, and _replication_ can be a
major job too. Live game? No time for offline optimization. Actual
broadcast has some major advantages.

Too right. I spend a bunch of time on this in class. Ethernet has some latency
built in to it in the best of times. Makes audio editing difficult, video is
bad enough at 30 frames per second, at 96,000 samples a second any serious
amount of latency is deadly.

Re: [MBZ] OT Netflix

2016-04-05 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Live streams are very very difficult because you can't optimize the compression
for whats on the screen. Sports are worse because the screen is constantly
changing. Most compression systems don't draw every picture (frame), instead you
draw one full frame (an I-frame) and then a series of frames where you draw
only whats changed (P-frames, which are predictive) in the picture. Generally
you do 15 P-frames for each I-frame. In sports this means you get a lot of
smear where stuff changes all over but we only follow the stuff that changes
most.
Also the requirement for doing this in real time means theres no time to
optimize each frame which when done really well can still take significant time
even on a really fast machine.

We use PlayOn (playon.tv); they recently restructured pricing such that it
is $40/year-ish, including support. Basically it is a DLNA server that
converts online video in real time and streams it as high -bandwidth MPEG2
within the house network. The PC is in the basement, and then we have PS3s
(with the media remotes, so it is a lot like a Tivo) on the TVs as DLNA
clients. Any other DLNA client should work as well.

For us a big advantage to PlayOn (aside from formal support) is that one
server can serve multiple TVs, so SWMBO can watch upstairs while kids watch
downstairs. (Another advantage I was not expecting: since the kids know they
can watch show X whenever, they wind up not watching at all. We did not get
this benefit from Tivo, though I'm not sure why it is different.)

There is a plug in for German content, so there might also be Italian; you
can look at playonplugins.com.

That written, since you have the computer on the (only?) TV already, you
might rather look at Boxee or XBMC. One of them might be the better
solution for your setup.

I have no affiliation with anyone who makes money from any of the above
companies, just a happy customer.

-Tim
Who must admit that, while life is more interesting, it is much harder to
keep the house clean when the children do not watch television.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Netflix

2011-02-11 Thread Tim C

XBox, Wii, and PlayStation game consoles will also let you watch
Netflix on your TV, assuming you have internet connectivity to the
console.

Rich Thomas richthomas79td...@constructivity.net writes:

It is served up over a net connection, needs to be fairly fast (my DSL
seems to run in the 5Mb range mostly and does OK). If you want to
watch it on a TV you need to either drive your TV with a PC (tried
that with a Macbook, not a great picture), get an Apple TV box for
$100 (does pretty well, not DVD quality but OK for spur of the moment
decision to watch something), or buy one of the new DVD players that
have Netflix capability (saw on for like $80 in the Sunday paper).
The streaming only version of Netflix is I think $9/mo now, a pretty
good deal. For streaming plus 2 DVDs out at a time I think it is $13
or 14, still a pretty good deal. DVDs show up in 2-3 days after
dropping watched ones in the mailbox.

I got the Apple TV box for Christmas, it works on the wifi network in
the house, has an occasional hiccup which might be the wifi or the
DSL, I don't know as it soon resolves itself, but overall I really
like it. With that you can also stream other stuff from a computer(s)
on your network, music, photos, or videos that you have in your iTunes
on the computer, which is nice too. It is pretty simple to work, and
the netflix menus and suggestions are quite nice. It has an HDMI port
for the TV (and might have an Svideo) and an optical out for digital
sound, and maybe a L/R stereo, you'll have to look at the specs. None
of the streaming stuff has surround sound though (at least what I have
watched) but I think there might be some vids that do, not sure.

My BIL got one of the DVD players, they get netflix and youtube vids
on it (the Apple box might do that too, I have not checked). The only
annoying thing is if you want to search for something it has a cursor
typing interface, which is annoying and slow, but works if you are
 patient.

I don't think you can run two streams from the same machine (or at
least you used-to-couldn't), so it is an end-to-end connection. In
any case the DVD plans have more simultaneous streams, I believe.

From watching my incoming traffic I think you could get away with a
512K connection, 1M gives a decent single-stream quality, bigger is
better from there. We could not do two high-quality streams
consistently on 3M, one or the other would back off - though their
algorithms have improved so I might try that again.

I have used PlayOn (playon.tv) with Netflix/Hulu/CBS/Nick/PBS/etc. for
almost two years, playing over the LAN into PS3s. Happy with it
overall; it has become quite stable, but you need a reasonably-decent
Windows machine to run it. Of course its lifespan is probably limited
since soon other providers will be available directly on the PS3
anyway: Netflix already is, Hulu is if you subscribe to Plus, just
Nick/PBS/CBS that we use anymore, and sports if my son/daughter get
into that I suppose. Anyway no cable or satellite TV for a long time
now, perfectly happy with -that- for sure. :)

Re: [MBZ] OT - Netflix

It is served up over a net connection, needs to be fairly fast (my DSL
seems to run in the 5Mb range mostly and does OK). If you want to watch
it on a TV you need to either drive your TV with a PC (tried that with a
Macbook, not a great picture), get an Apple TV box for $100 (does pretty
well, not DVD quality but OK for spur of the moment decision to watch
something), or buy one of the new DVD players that have Netflix
capability (saw on for like $80 in the Sunday paper). The streaming
only version of Netflix is I think $9/mo now, a pretty good deal. For
streaming plus 2 DVDs out at a time I think it is $13 or 14, still a
pretty good deal. DVDs show up in 2-3 days after dropping watched ones
in the mailbox.

I got the Apple TV box for Christmas, it works on the wifi network in
the house, has an occasional hiccup which might be the wifi or the DSL,
I don't know as it soon resolves itself, but overall I really like it.
With that you can also stream other stuff from a computer(s) on your
network, music, photos, or videos that you have in your iTunes on the
computer, which is nice too. It is pretty simple to work, and the
netflix menus and suggestions are quite nice. It has an HDMI port for
the TV (and might have an Svideo) and an optical out for digital sound,
and maybe a L/R stereo, you'll have to look at the specs. None of the
streaming stuff has surround sound though (at least what I have watched)
but I think there might be some vids that do, not sure.

My BIL got one of the DVD players, they get netflix and youtube vids on
it (the Apple box might do that too, I have not checked). The only
annoying thing is if you want to search for something it has a cursor
typing interface, which is annoying and slow, but works if you are patient.

Alltel specifically says my cellular modem is NOT for video.
Verizon and Sprint just cap your monthly bandwidth (Verizon charges you a
fortune for exceeding 5GB, Sprint cancels you if you make a habit of using too
much) and AFAIK don't care what you do with the bandwidth.

What they are attempting to do is charge you based on the type and
quantity of data not just the throughput. Everyones ISP is based on
throughput but sometimes they cap the quantity. This is net neutral
billing as it doesn't matter what type of billing is occurring. What has
happened is the longhaul/backhaul people (ATT biggest proponent) want
to charge the ISP's based on the type of data. Claiming that things like
video streaming and torrent traffic are eating up all the BW and that it
is more costly for them to gauruntee bandwidth like business
transactions (that they already bill higher for). What it comes down to
is that the internet providers wants us, the consumer, to pay more
becuase they have spent decades overbilling us by over subscribing their
product. Now that we can actually use the BW they promised us all along,
they want us to pay more for it. It would could also allow for taxation
of the internet for different rates based on the type of bandwidth used.

It is basically a net provider bailout.

2008-11-06 Thread Rolf
My wife and I have all but tossed out satellite box out the window. We
watch netflix every night on the laptop (19 screen its a behometh). The
starz selection of movies is great. They could still work on their
selection a lot though. We are seriously considering the box and moving
the flat screen into the bedroom.

Well Im thinking they dont have anything for instant download that is
HD, but it will play it when they come out with it. I suppose a person
could use it for standard def stuff and still have blu ray disks mailed.

Also, each major network (ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC) all have most of their
prime time shows available in HD anytime you want it. That's how I
watch my TV. The only thing that is missing is live sports...
