Yeah I'm thinking I should tear into it and see if anything is obviously
broken, the door switch seems an obvious culprit.

some apartment, I pulled it out, cleaned it up, and plugged it in. It

Vintage matters, the older ones are a lot more solidly constructed,
and easier to repair. The circuit is actually quite simple, usually a
timer, a few safety switches, and a magnetron tube circuit. My
Amana has blown the fuse a couple of times in the 30 years I've
been using it.
