Heating the spark plug electrodes is an old two stroke trick. Two stroke plugs get oil fouled with semi burned oil carbon, then get further fouled while trying to start, using lots of choke, and prime. Heating the plugs helps burn off the semi carbon residue and that allows the electrons to make spark... Bob's yer Unkle.. Glad the trick still works. Re: [MBZ] Sort of OT Car totals
I imagine its a thing that gets done but I've never heard of anybody doing it on a snowmobile. Anyway today I hit the points with more Deoxit and shaved them a little with a file, then cleaned the shavings out with discount electronics cleaner, then more deoxit, a little more file and more cleaner. The points are super annoying to get to. Take the exhaust out, the recoil and its cup out and then you can see the points through slots in the flywheel (technically the magneto). Anyway with that done I got nice bright snaps on the plugs but still no start so I pulled each carb out of its boot but left the controls connected, and cleaned the bowls and jets. Mikuni carbs are super easy to work on. STILL wouldn't run. It'd start if I squirted premix past the carbs but it'd only run for a second or three. While the carbs were out I proved the fuel pump was pumping. So as a last ditch effort I pulled the plugs and heated the electrodes until they glowed, stuffed it all back together, primed it once more and it fired up and stayed running... Heating the electrodes is a trick I was told by a Triumph motorcycle mechanic. Its never worked for me before. I'm not sure it actually did anything now but whatever, the machine ran. I drove it all around the yard, it scoots as good as a 340cc with a cleated track ever does. Now, do I sell it or register it as a vintage sled and ride it, or both? I've got another vintage machine I could ride if I let this one go down the road. -Curt On Sunday, January 31, 2021, 1:29:28 PM EST, wrote: Back in the day, motorcycle racers used to have their magnetos remagnetized periodically. You can see some of them but others are under shed roofs. The CD and a D and an SD that is a parts car can be seen as well as 2 of the Chevy vans and a white Jeep that I still have can be seen. I should know that you guys would be enablers. I spent yesterday getting snowmobiles running. The '98 and '91 Arctic Cats both fired up relatively easily. The 91 was stuck, I didn't run it last year and is must have had a little condensation in it and it was wicked cold yesterday. I put an electric heater on it for half an hour or so and it loosened up pretty good. The 79 Polaris won't go, spark is iffy. I cleaned the points but apparently haven't gotten them clean enough, it'll pop but won't stay running. I'll file them some more I guess. Snowmobile points are way harder to replace than car points. They live behind the flywheel and are powered by magneto so they're hard to clean/test/replace. Re: [MBZ] Sort of OT Car totals
At just over 50, I've bought 14 cars so far, still own six, five are MB cars. I've only owned one American car, a '67 Plymouth VIP, when I was in college. Most of the rest are German and Japanese, with an Alpha Romeo mixed in while I lived in Bella Napoli. Owning a muscle car (the VIP) was a blast, that was a red coupe, burned almost as much oil as gasoline. Actually could take a corner very well, and man was that 'go pedal' addicting. Somehow I never got a ticket in that car. Max Dillon Charleston SC Jan 30, 2021 5:06:22 PM Donald Snook via Mercedes : > With the addition of the Kaleb 240D, I added up all the cars I have had.
