The last time I saw the leak was three weeks ago, and memory is failing. It
looked like a soft rubber line, not screw type, was covering a metal line.
Could it be the hard line had worn through at the clip holding it to the block?
I guess I really need to get back to the shop while the car
And it can handle the pressure? I assume there is pressure in the line that
requires some magic to keep it in.

This is the typical failure -- rubber goes bad, line vibrates against
the clip and the inevitable road dirt and grit and wears through.
They can be brazed, they are usually just ground through, not corroded.

OK, I think I understand where I am now.
The shop wants $350 to install a new rubber patch of hose to replace the worn
out hose that the clamp is no longer keeping the magic from escaping.
I am sort of sure I can find some pretty hose and a bit of shoe goo that will
serve.

You can buy bulk trans oil cooler hose at flaps. It is made for oil,
heat and pressure... that and 2 hose clamps and you can bridge the
bad section you cut out.
You can also use the original as a pattern, buy brake tubing and a
tubing bending tool at FLAPS, and bend up a replacement. If
