Grand touring, so not a sports car, but a joy to drive.  I compare it to the 
OM606 w124, an almost sporty sedan with restrained power.  New seats makes for 
easy two tank trips (450-500 mile) with no saddle soreness.  Soft top is 
expensive to renew, so that is a large plus.  Both indicate to me care has been 
taken to keep the car in good fettle.  Paint/clear is a pain, but a good shop 
could do spot remedy, as the hood and trunk could be removed to get the work 
done.  The probability of coming out with a great roadster with minimal outlay 
is good.  Downside is that R107 values peaked around the end of 2019.  Seller 
may have priced this taking into account the market for them is shrinking and 
he needs dental work over finding the “right” buyer.

I sold my SL this past June for over $7k.  1973 with 215k on the clock, factory 
two tone green on green, returned to mostly factory spec. but needing more than 
this fellow is selling his SL.  I would be a serious buyer if I had opportunity 
and wanted a top down cruising toy.  They have great cabin heat for winter 
trips and you can go top down for spring and autumn.  Not sure about summers, 
as you need loads of sunblock and high speeds to keep cool.  AC would not 
overcome heat and it is overly expensive to rebuild the system to bother.

Jim outlined the salient issues with this model.  Give it the same level of 
scrutiny you would any other 35 year old car.  Battery is cheap, tires, if 
those are 15” bundts are reasonable.  Getting V rated 14in are not cheap  
(vredstein $280).   I think I went with H rated General Altimax for around 
$110, thought the BF Goodrich were on the list.

Top-down around-the-lake cruising you can hit 20mpg.  That's the best
you can hope for on these.

Single-row chain disappeared in '83, that's the crossover year.
An '85 will be fine.

Valve stem seals could be an issue, but those are DIY replaceable.
Annoying, but not that difficult or expensive.

Rust, and cosmetic condition are all on a R107.  Everything else can
be dealt with.  That's a last-year 380, and so all weaknesses have been
addressed.  Could be a very nice deal.  Mine had fuel pump relay and
soft top issues.  Likely much of the middle-aged electronics needs a
resoldering.  Cheap/free, if time-consuming, for the handy.  380 uses
regular gas, not premium.  That looks like a _way_ better deal than the
$2000 one I bought years ago.

It's a pain to install, but a plastic (Coverlay, etc.) dash top is _way_ nicer
than the rug.

That 'new' leather interior looks a bit peely for new.  Painted?  Even so,
that can be re-done with Leatherique paint.

The paint looks baked/tired.  Freshly washed and not yet dry for pictures?

That was about what I expected. Probably does not matter all that much 
as something like this is more likely to be a toy than a daily driver 
and if the latter, then the owner probably is not too worried about fuel 
costs.

fluids and filters out on every new to me vehicle so I have a baseline.

 I plan on changing all the fluids soon after buying any used vehicle anyway. I 
don't know what the previous owner used or how often they were changed. This 
puts the vehicle on my maintenance schedule and lets me at least get some idea 
whats up inside the components.
