I am always to hot in most stores I visit.  Feels like it's 75 or higher in 
many.
at home we keep it at 66-68F in winter --

usually because of the heat from office equipment/lights etc the issue  
is keeping the heat
down.

I once worked as a consultant in a Sprint owned 20 story building,  
during the weekend coding
madness the temp would climb to 90F+   We finally said this is crazy  
how much does it cost
to run the building A/C?  Was turned off to *save* money, cause who  
was in the building anyway
Besides 100 contractors burning overtime...

Manager when away talked to the building owners. Came back and said  
$57 per day
We charged the $114 for each weekend to the pizza/food account.

I have also worked in smart building armed with a key & flashlight so  
that we could
turn the lights back on via the main electrical panel when the  
system's motion detectors
and clock decide there shouldn't be any more staff present, no just a  
few consultants
grinding away at 10:30 at night...  Not enough movement to retrip the  
sensors...


So maybe they stop the a/c and heat with the lamps

Alybody remember the gas wars of the 60s on the highway to Boston from New
Haven?  There was a strip with traffic lights and many competing gas
stations, one of which had it down to $.22/gal. during the "war".

I keep ours 68 during the day in the winter, 62 at night and when nobody 
is home, program thermostat.  In the summer, used to keep it 78 when 
people home, but I think I dropped it to 76.  82 during the day when 
nobody here. At night have it set to drop to something like 72.  Heard 
somewhere its cooler at night so easier for the system to drop the temp 
overnight, then the next day its already cooled way down so the unit 
does not have to hardly run at all on the warmup to the 82 daytime set.

To be honest, I don't care that they leave the lights on, I'd just rather
they didn't tell me what to do with mine.  I'm paying for both after all, as
well as the cleaning staff. ;-) Come to think of it, as we pick up the tab
for everything the gov does, you'd think they would speak to us a little
nicer at times. :-)

I'm not quite ready to live like that.  While I'll turn a light off if I
leave a room, I think ppl are taking this whole global warming/cooling thing
a little far.  I keep the house at 69, shower three times a day, and use
premium gas in all my cars, and I'm not yet convinced doing any of the above
makes a bit of  difference on the grand scale of things.  I dont' feel
guilty about doing any of these things either.  I brush often too and don't
worry too much about the toothpaste going down the drain.  Guess I'm just an
evil man.  But if being evil means smelling good, guess there's no hope for
me. hee hee. :-)

I'm guilty as charged.  I keep mine at 73. I like to be comfortable 
wearing pants, socks, and a short sleeved shirt.  Thats what I wear at 
work, and when I go outside I put on a jacket.  If I lived farther north 
I might wear a long sleeved shirt (they aggravate me to no end though), 
but down here in MS it doesn't bother me to pony up the money to stay 
warm.  I also keep it at 72-73 in the summer (now that is probably on 
the excessive side in MS).

I do this partly because my parents were so stingy about it.  Especially 
my Dad.  When I'd go visit him he'd have the thermostat set at 84 in 
Phoenix in the summer.  When I'm sitting in a chair using the computer 
(ie, no physical activity) I should not be sweating.  I've always argued 
that it was worth the money to be comfortable, and now I'm just carrying 
that out!! ;)

Some people sweat, etc at different levels.  Personally, by late evening 
my hair is all greasy and the next morning I feel nasty.  I very rarely 
go without a daily shower... just so I can feel like a normal person. 
Don't forget people showering after going to the gym.

Wow! 62 and 64 is going above and beyond the call! The gov't in Canada had
tv ads that suggested you turn your t-stat to 68 and put on a sweater, and
you're well beyond that!

I don't understand this obsession with surgical cleanliness that people seem
to have nowadays. Anti-bacterial this, and daisy fresh that. What a load of
shit. Especially when you get some desk jockey whose most strenuous moment
of the day is lifting his/her coffee cup and they have a shower in the
morning and when they get home...or at the gym. (that one I understand)

As for truckers, whenever I got some idiot being aggressive behind me I
would bide my time until we reached a big hill or two. Then, as we
approached the hill I would lift of the pedal and slow down without touching
my brakes. He'd have no choice but to back off and it takes him a lot longer
to get going again than it does me! This was only done when actual idiots
were at the wheel, flashing their lights before they even got close, or
riding inches from my rear bumper. In Ontario, trucks are not allowed in the
passing lane. (Left lane)

What always amuses me about JIT inventory is that it applies strictly  
to putting parts together.  Doesn't take long in American  
manufacturing for the management to want JIT MANUFACTURING of parts,   
jigs, fixtures, etc.

There is an enormous difference between the arrival of pre- 
manufactured parts and MAKING them on instant demand

JIT works great IF someone ELSE has the warehouses.

thermostat and put on a sweater! I am so stiflingly hot and uncomfortable in

wife is here.

And another thing: I don't think people should take more than one shower a
day. Heck I don't even take one a day. Isn't it shocking? I am willing to
deal with the increase in body odor I'd have to endure from the general
public. Heck, I'd rather smell that than bad breath, and It seems to me that
the overwhelming majority of people have that problem. I think I have a very
effective nose or something. It's a curse.

You'd think diesel exhaust would kill some smell receptors, but I don't
know. (My MB content)

Well, I'm sure you're probably correct about this.

On the other hand, I am almost constantly disappointed in the lack of
professionalism displayed by the drivers of big rigs (and city and school
buses for that matter). It often seems to be a matter of bullying. Yes,
truckers have to stand up for their rights and not allow themselves to be
inconvenienced by inconsiderate cars, but I often see pushy driving by
truckers too. Often this takes the form of tailgating you in the left lane
as you try to pass the car in the right lane. So you have to downshift - get
over it - you have no right to tailgate. And when you're piloting multiple
more tons than the passenger car, I believe your responsibility is pretty
grave and you ought to act accordingly or find another line of work.

I recall one day on the interstate when I was speeding (yes, believe it or
not). And I went to go around a semi, and another semi proceeded to block my
way without any reason. Then the two of them created a rolling roadblock for
me. I can only assume they took me for the typical clueless driver screwing
around and not respecting them.

Had I better tires and more power (non-turbo SAAB) I would have nailed it
and passed on the shoulder. I'd like to get my hands on these two idiots and
see how tough they are on two feet.

Let's remember as well that the JIT inventory idea came from a MUCH smaller
country. I imagine it was easier to arrange shipping when the farthest
distance between supplier and factory could only be 300 miles or so...(just
guessing..I've no idea how big Japan is)

Alfa GTV with dual Webbers.  I was getting 45 mpg at 70 mph on the highway and 
I can't recall the in-town mileage.  I lived on the NW side of Indianapolis and 
worked a couple of days a week on the East side.  I was averaging $2.50 a week 
for fuel, though if you counted repair and maintenance costs that didn't matter 
as much as it should have.

That is the magic of Al Gore and his movement. He weaves the tiniest little 
slice of truth into all of the other crap, and then acts self righteous when 
his critics point out that a lot of what he has alleged is a) not true or

Global warming is real - to what extent - is another story.  Is it man made? I 
am not sure it all is.  Does it actually affect us?  Not sure about that 
either.  Does Al Gore want to profit from his gloom and doom prophesy which is 
yet to be shown the least bit accurate? THAT is one of the few things I am 
certain about.

Time and money.
Considering that the goods have to be shifted from factory to rail head 
and then at the other end from rail head to final destination. Easier 
and more likely cheaper to just have a truck take the goods from A to B.
There are systems in place where the whole trailer is put onto rail and 
they just have to hook up a semi, perhaps a Mercedes semi (for a bit of 
MB content).

I agree with that, except it is a lot safer to have that cargo on the trains - 
at least safer for those cars on the interstate.  I also agree that a lot of 
the safety problems associated with trucks are not the fault of the truckers, 
but rather the morons who don't know how to drive.  BUT, just having more and 
more big trucks on the roads increases the chances of accidents. And accidents 
involving two cars are a lot less deadly to the other vehicles, than accidents 
involving 18 wheelers.

A truck can get a load from one coast to the other in 5-8 days.
Every time, any destination.

The railroad takes longer, and if it's not a major market at
each end it is even longer.

Boats and barges are still the most efficient use of fuel - but
they are even slower and more route restricted than rail!

Even when MB and VW and BMW and GM were all selling lots of
diesel cars, the quantity of diesel used by cars was a _lot_
less than big trucks. It still is.

Lets figure a ordinary solo driver will log 2500 miles (4025 km)
per week. A typical truck could achive 6.25 mi/gal (2.65 l/km)
This results in 400 (1500 l) gallons per week. In my 240D, it
would take me 6 months to use the same quantity of fuel the
truck uses every week. Thus my usage and tax is just a "drop in
the bucket".

Problem is that the RRs are a series of monopolies.  If you want to ship 
your freight or semi full of freight to many places, you have the choice of 
only one railroad company and you have to pay their price.  Nationalizing 
the railroads probably wouldn't work but nationalizing the tracks (just like 
the interstate system is "nationalized") might work.  That way, you'd have 
numerous startups and established companies running to the same places, and 
the "market" (competition) would keep the prices within reason.  I've seen 
articles outlining how this could be done using a traffic control system 
similar to air traffic control.

I agree with you Ed. I really enjoy the trains...especially now that I live
in a country where the actually HAVE trains to use. In October we went to
Paris on the TGV. Talk about smooth! Like a baby's bum at 320 km/hr! Even
changed tracks at that speed!

Apparently the French have a prototype rail based train that can do 580
km/hr! Woohoo!!

Meanwhile, back here in the boonies, I take the GO train and it rattles and
hums at a whopping 100-110 km/hryawn...chunky, clunky and painfully
slow...

Hopefully when the price of fuel rises some more, people will realise that
the short-sighted designs of our cities will make us pay! hahaha, I can't
wait!

It's also better to get off the train and be in the city centrenot 50 km
away. And I don't mind lugging my luggage on and off instead of having to
wait in the terminal for ages.

I remember taking the train as a kid and young teen many times, over driving
or flying.  I find flying now, on those 4-5 hour flights are just a pain and
wast of time.  You spend more time in customs at either end, than you do in
the air.  There was a real romance about boarding a train. I often took the
old Turbo between Toronto and Montreal, and if felt very much like boarding
the Concorde of trains.  The seating would rival any First Class airplane
ticket at the time, and you would walk around, sit up in the 747 type engine
where there was a bar.  Snack bar was very cool, and the best part, they had
a microwave!!  They'd reheat a hotdog or hamburger, bun already on.  Sure,
it was all soggy, and so hot it melted the plastic to the bun, but it was
amazing all the same. The cars were all joined, without the usual doors
between each car, just one long articulated tube.  It was fast, smooth, and
very modern at the time.  It had it's problems, and was pulled out of
service, but it was pretty cool at the time.  It's replacement was more
conventional and reliable, but felt like a big step back.  Much like we have
given up the Concorde to ride double decker buses in the sky.  Am I the only
one bored with the offerings of the past 30 years?  Oh, the good old days.
OMG, did I just say that?  Guess I'm now officially old. hee hee.

It looks like they are finally realizing that they need to have a 
marketing & sales department!!  I think they've also started to improve 
their turnaround time.  IE, drop off to pick up time.  I think I 
remember reading that it takes trucks 3 days to bring freight across the 
country, but rail was 4 or 5 days since it had to sit in a rail yard for 
about a day at both the source and destination.  In todays market where 
people spend millions of dollars to minimize their inventory on hand, 
when they need to meet demand they need it to be met quickly.  Rail is 
finally starting to work on that! :)

about when it's much more efficient to ship via rail!

Someone on this list responded a couple of years ago when I ranted about
this, that the problem was the railways following the current business
idealcorner the market and sodomise the client. Because of this the
trucking industry filled the gap and we have the silly mess we have now.

The railroads actually seem to be making a comeback.  Lots of them are 
expanding and upgrading their tracks(double tracks and upgrading to 
higher speed corners in downtown ($$$) areas).  The folks at Trains 
magazine are also commenting on the increase in business.  Most of them 
say it is coming from the saturated highway system.

They have many years of neglect to recover from though.

When I first started driving, gas was $.74/gal. I drive a 1978 Oldsmobile Delta 
88.  I remember one time, I didn't know if I could make it home and only had 52 
cents in the ashtray.   I pulled into a station that offered a 4 cent discount 
on gas if bought paid cash. So, I put in 56 cents and brought my 52 cents to 
the register.  The guy was laughing at me and told me the discount was only 
good if you bought a whole gallon.  He gave me a break and didn't beat the 
other four pennies out of me.

I paid $.0139 during the "Gas Wars" in Connecticut, about 1959 or so.  They 
pumped it too!

Some stations had young ladies in bathing suits pumping gas and handing out

Be careful what you wish for or you might find yourself driving a A

would have thought back in the 80s when Benz was cranking out diesel powered
automobiles, a stink would have been raised over this tax. Well, maybe it
wasn't raised because the price was not a problem and it was, after all,
still cheaper than gas.

I do agree with the concept that the more damage a vehicle does to the road,
the more its operator should pay in road tax. But I haven't fully thought
the issue through in terms of: Goods have to get shipped, and we all
need/want them, so why penalize those in the business of shipping them? I do
know that when I see a tractor trailer on the road around my house, I sorta
cringe at the wear they are putting on the road. (and I cringe for a couple
other reasons) I guess as someone who spends a lot of time on a bicycle, the
road edge is important to me.

Truth told, I think that in this age of crisis in terms of oil and
environment and road congestion, (yes the last one IS a crisis!), folks who
opt to drive vehicles that are considerably larger than they need ought to
be made to contribute more somehow. I guess if your vehicle registration or

So I say let's repeal the tax on diesel fuel. And let's levy a tax on, at

The graduated glass cylinder was one way the customer could be
sure he was getting what he paid for.  I pumped many a tank out
of one of these we had at the barn.  Held 10 gallons, usually we'd
only pump a few into the tractor.  Rusty beat-up old thing from
my grandpa's service station.  (Had another stored in the barn.)
It could be seen (just) from the road, occasionally a stranger
would drive in and ask if they could buy it.  Never sold it, any
modern replacement would require power to pump.  It's still there,
but decommissioned due to in-ground tank leaks.  Now they use a
surface tank with a cheap nasty barrel pump on it.

1930s.  This was for the first car in the family; a 1928 Oakland which had 
wooden spoke wheels, a cloth top, and a rumble seat.

The "filling station" across the street had gravity flow pumps.  The 
attendant would hand pump the amount of gas you wanted into a glass cylinder 
at the top of the pump which was marked off in gallons, and then it would 
drain by gravity through the hose and into your tank.
Some stations would keep the cylinder full and dispense it between the 
gallon marks.
One day we heard a loud boom and the house windows rattled.  A fellow who 
was putting gas in the tank of a model T Ford at the station across the 
street was standing over the tank which was under the front seat.  When he 
lit a cigarette the gas exploded and blew him out of the car. That was on 
Market Street in New Albany, Indiana.

When my buddies and I would go around driving after the ball games in 
high school, we would all throw in 50cents and stop at the gas station, 
put a goodly amount in the tank (say $2 would get 8gal or so), and 
whoever drove would have enough to last a good part of the week.  The 
one who usually drove had a Rambler with (if I recall) a 327 in it, 
quite a sleeper.  There was a motorhead kid who put a Corvette engine in 
his Rambler, had cut-outs on the pipes, and would go roaring in front of 
school and downshift and make one hell of a racket, we all knew who it 
was.  Another guy had a Corvair, one day about 9AM he gets called out of 
class, his car parked a block or so away was on fire and burning up.  
Cops, fire trucks, school officials, the whole deal turned out.  He was 
freaked out.. Turns out he had left a roach in the ashtray that morning, 
and it smoldered an hour or so before conflagrating.  The dope he lost 
was probably worth more than the car, that really bummed him, and he 
thought he was going to get busted when they tried to figure out why the 
car caught fire.  He had a hose rigged up to a bottle of whiskey in the 
front trunk too, so you could take a hit off it while driving, but no 
containers visible.  He got a job at Mac's Diner to make some money to 
buy another car (and held off on his fledgling pharmaceutical business 
for awhile), we would go by there on our drives, order a cheeseburger 
and coke, and he would give us a grocery sack full of burgers fries 
drinks pies, whatever was on the shelf.  Burgers cost about what a 
gallon of gas cost (see, all that story closes well!).  I think he ran 
for mayor or president or something.

of crude oil was how much a barrel?

But it's not just the price of crude oil. The cost of labor & construction
materials has more than doubled since the 70s.

Diesel is higher than regular gas because of a tax that was added onto
diesel in the early 80s. Back then, the interstate system was in serious
financial trouble and the government was trying to find a way to fund
repairs & new construction. They analyzed traffic and discovered that
truckers & their loads were responsible for more than 80% of the wear on the
interstate road system. They needed a tax that was tied directly to road
usage and an additional tax on diesel fuel made perfect since because back
then over 99% of all "on road" diesel was burned by truckers.

In a way it makes sense for fuel to be priced proportional to its
energy content per gallon/liter, if all else were equal.

I don't know how much coverage you folks get of Canadian news (none? - USA is a 
bit introverted in many ways) but
British Columbia provincial government just introduced a carbon tax. They will 
tax all sorts of fuel for vehicles,
heating etc.  I guess they think that it is "green" to tax further in order to 
save the planet.  If this sort of
thing carries on, I'm gonna need to move to a warmer climate as it is a bit 
much to expect a poor old bu**er like
me to freeze in the dark just to save the world for my non-existent (at this 
stage anyway) grandchilren.

One would think that ownership of a real old MB diesel would be sufficient 
evidence of my good enviromental wishes
without looking for ways to tax me to reinforce Al Gore's message, but then, 
governments of all stripes do love to
tax us.

What I like is when the price of crude jumps in response to a
reduced ability to refine it. Totally bassackwards, but that's
the way it always seems to go. The senseless jumps in crude
are usually shortable, april contracts are back down to 98.55
already. $1450 a contract for going short at $100 isn't a huge
gain, but it makes a nice day's pay.

that it was actually a pretty small refinery, but that the market
would probably react disproportionately.  I'm sure gas prices
shot up in speculation, not due to any actual shortage in supply.

[MBZ] Whoa look at the price of fuel

Gas and diesel shot up this morning here in Wichita. I would guess it did the 
same thing everywhere. Regular unleaded 3.09 premium 3.29 and diesel is 3.39.  
I am thinking next time, I have to take a long trip for work, I am going to 
rent a car.  17 on the highway in my Expedition hurts
