I squeeze the bulb, put the pc board joint in the hole in the tip of the iron,
wait a couple of seconds, and let go of the bulb. Put the iron over an aluminum
pot pie tin (too bad Banquet quit making those wonderful tools) and squirt out
the old stuff.
And as others have noted, reusing the solder in the iron does not work, have to
resolder with new after removing the old.

tip over it and push the button - pop, there goes the solder.

I just use some copper braid made for that purpose. Melt solder, touch braid to
it and it pulls the solder off the connection. The sucker creates a vacuum.

That's what I'm going to do next time. In fact yesterday the cruise did not
want to work during the first part of the day but started working again later
on. This was after installling it back on the bracket. If I got to pull it it
again this is what I will do. I drove the 95 e300 today and the cruise appears
dead in it also.

I find that a magnet from an old hard drive works very nicely to hold bots
in place while putting the bracket, etc. on it from below.
The magnet does need to come from an old hard drive, not a newer one - they
are too small/weak.

Re: [MBZ] Cruise control amp install

2017-07-30 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I ended up getting the bolt started. I was finally able to get into a position
to where I could see it better, carefully got the bracket on and pulled down on
it enough to put enough pressure on the bolt so it would not push back in while
threading the nut. Got the nut on about a thread worth and was them able to
tighten it down. What a pug of a job. Removing is easy, installing is not.

Re: [MBZ] Cruise control amp recap

2017-07-23 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
The GenRad calls the ESR rating "Q". I look at that,
and the rated capacitance. The Heathkit IT-28 is responsible
for the leakage test, and is the only one that puts significant
voltage on the cap. I always start there, and if it passes that
test then I'll throw it on one of the good bridge testers. Plus I
just like that green magic eye tube winking at me...

I like the GenRad 1657, but the HP 4277A is clearly a much
more expensive piece of equipment. I haven't had it all that
long. (It, like the others, was free to me.)

The Frako electrolytics turn in miserable performance numbers.
They can short out, they lose capacitance, they develop
high ESR...

Maybe. But I don't think so. But by measuring the Effective
Series Resistance (which I am _presuming_ is how Jim is testing
them), it is not a binary test - that is, good/bad. As the
capacitor deteriorates the ESR drifts. IF it hasn't change in 20
years, there is no reason to think it will begin now.

How good are your replacements? Will they Frakos in 5 years?
The others on the board have demonstrated their stability.

Jim, am I right on your test gear? Is there another factor I'm
not considering?

On the dozen-plus CC amps I have repaired, I've _never_ replaced any
capacitor except a Frako. The other repair is re-soldering everything. I
had _one_ that killed some driver transistors, probably due to bad
soldering that allowed the H-drive to engage a short across the power.

IMHO, de-Frako and resolder everything, and you're good to go.

[MBZ] cruise control amp

2008-01-08 Thread hans hansel
I took the advice from this group and pulled the cruise control amp from my
84 300d. Tried applying heat to all the solder connections on the back of
the board, but I learned that I'm not as good with a soldering iron as I
thought. I wound up about halfway through before I melted my fingers.

I reinstalled the amp and it hold cruise for about a minute, then
disengages. The accelerate function works ok.

So now I'm looking for a replacement 13 pin amp, part #7932.

Anyone got any ideas where I can find one?

Is thee a link to fix these? MB Model number is 001-545 2132

You can resolder them yourself if you like, most of them seem to
respond to that in my experience. But it's a tedious job, and
you'd better know how to solder if you want a good chance of success.
Or I can do it. Or you can get a fixed one with a substantial
warrantee (and price tag) from GDI or Programma tools, though
a quick Google for these doesn't yield any particularly good hits.

http://cathey.dogear.com/JSLcruise.html for DIY,
http://cathey.dogear.com/mamerepairs.html if rubbing the lamp.

I hate to rain on your parade, but if you're soldering for the first
time on this, it probably won't work. Especially with a gun rather than
a good iron with a fine tip. There are a _lot_ of connections, and
they're
rather small (though nothing when compared to modern surface-mount.)
But

if that's OK with you, it's OK with me!

But if you do send me one, I'd prefer it to be one you haven't tried
yourself first, no offense intended.

If you take enough time, and are careful enough, you _can_ probably get
it to work. But beware of cooking the components to death, or burning
or lifting the traces off the board with excess heat.

what could be serviced for this?

More description required. Is it a little jiggly surge like a spastic
foot might cause, especially if irregular, or is it more of a long-scale
hunting effect? What is the time scale of the surge, in other words?

Jumpy speedo cable can cause it, as can poor vacuum supply. Or a bad
solder joint in the PID amplifier circuit of the servo system.

You also need some good solder, and may find that some sort of solder
removal device (I use a Solda-pullit) to remove excess will come in
handy.

And do not overlook the paint stripper step. Really.

Go slowly, be careful, don't apply too much heat for too long, and be
sure to always grasp the iron by the not-so-hot end. Use a damp cotton
rag to clean the tip occasionally.

On a 126 you're talking about the servomotor unit. If lubing the
linkage
doesn't do it it's probably the amplifier needing resoldering.
Sometimes
the feedback potentiometer track inside the servomotor wears out, but
that

results in difficulties with one particular speed. If setting a
significantly different speed results in different behavior that's a
good clue there.

You also need some good solder, and may find that some sort of solder

And do not overlook the paint stripper step. Really.

I'd also highly recommend you practice on something you don't care

skill in automotive work, anyway.) Then disassemble an old clock radio
or something like that and try resoldering those joints, or buy a small
kit that includes a PC board and put it together.
(www.ramseyelectronics.com has some.) Soldering well is a skill you
learn with practice. It's not hard, but like anything your early
results won't look so good. It will open up a whole new world of
electronics repair and fabrication for you, though. It's so nice to be
able to buy connectors and such without having to worry about whether
the terminals are solder-type or screw-type.

One of the early mistakes a beginner makes is to heat the solder.Heating
the wire (for example) to be soldered and allowing the solder to melt
against the wire is preferable to heating the solder. Also, using too much
solder is a early mistake. And do not allow the pieces being soldered to
move until the solder hardens.

Good luck -

You can resolder them yourself if you like, most of them seem to
respond to that in my experience. But it's a tedious job, and
you'd better know how to solder if you want a good chance of success.
Or I can do it. Or you can get a fixed one with a substantial
warrantee (and price tag) from GDI or Programma tools, though
a quick Google for these doesn't yield any particularly good hits.

Old cruise controls do that. They can become intermittent. Sometimes
using them daily improves reliably and sometimes not (but they USUALLY
act up again following a period of disuse). They will often work for an
hour or two and then quit or they may not work until the engine is
REALLY warmed up. Resolding by someone with really good soldering skills
corrects these ABOUT 50% of the time (if you don't have really well
developed soldering skills DON'T practice on a cruise amp). Some units
really require replacement of the electrolytic capacitors or even
transistors. Schematics are very scarce - Mercedes doesn't supply them
to anyone.

As I recall they are 14 pin, but have a plug-in that that earlier units
don't have. It may be matched to the car/engine.

I tried removing the CC amp today - I removed the black plastic panel,
unplugged the CC amp, but I couldn't see/access the screws or bolts holding
the amp in. Where are they?

Also, do I have to remove the tan dash panel just below the steering
column? If so, how? I thought I removed all the screws (incl. 3 behind the
e-brake release) but it wasn't coming off.

Sunil,

Yes, remove the tan panel. After you remove the screws, there are a few
poppers that must be released on the trim panel. Just give a careful tug at
one
end and work your way accross.

All the cruises I have done are held in place by a single 6mm bolt that goes
through the aluminum brake pedal framework. ON yours, I believe you will
find the head of the bolt on the left side of the cruise control. Start out
by
feeling for the head of the bolt and then you will know where to position
yourself to get at it

Use a 10mm deep socket with a 1/4 inch drive ratchet, if you have one. Do
not worry about any device that is piggy backed onto the cruise amp. You can
just unplug it and then separate them on the work bench.

Earlier models went in from the right side and the brake pedal was
definitely an obstacle.

Good luck,
