In our house in Wisconsin we had a library. We’re talking floor to ceiling
(10’) shelves and raised panel oak walls. I built the whole thing myself. It
was beautiful.

When we moved I looked at the literally thousands of books we had and said,
“There is no way I am moving all of these 1200 miles.”

I’m down to four 8' high oak bookshelves, and they’re not full.

Understood. After you come home from work you’re often no motivated to do
much….

Good idea, too. I really worked on my organizational skills when I was in the
business world and one of the things I learned early on was to look at
everything I had on my desk and identify what was the quickest and easiest
stuff to get done and move off. Then I had time for the more involved things.

Well Kaleb, if I was in your situation where I had a place to work and
store/accumulate stuff, I would just prioritize what needed to be done and
commit time to doing it. I’m realistic enough to understand that that much
stuff can’t be done in a short time. Around here i usually have one day a week
I commit to cars, usually Saturday, but at the same time I’m doing laundry and
other household chores as well. If the wife is working late or has some sort
of social time with her friends, which usually happens about once a week, those
evenings are mine and usually end up getting allocated to car or house stuff.

For instance, last night she had book club with the girls, so I used the time
to get the new auxiliary fans installed on the E300D. Since i get home around
4:00 pm I have a nice chunk of time available without worrying about running
into the evening.

Granted, I don’t have young children around the house any more, so that also
frees up a lot of time.

I feel much the same about boats. I have had 6 so far that I have never
had in the water and driven.

I have not lost money on any of them. I have made a few dollars swapping
one for another but I do feel bad about the fact that I have not even
had the opportunity to try them out.

The current one may go that way too as I am trying to buy a different
one right now.

None of these are valuable items. They just need some work and most
people won't do it and it would cost too much to have done by a shop so
they dump them.

I could fix them but time is short and I have not good place to work on
them so they sit until I let someone else have them.

As I said, the saving grace is that I am not losing any money so far. I
am ahead a little bit so it is not a profitable thing if I factor in my
time to haul them to the cottage.

However, it keeps me happy just to always be looking for a better candidate.

My dad is in the same boat, in the past year he engineered and managed a
handicap access project for the Rod & Gun club. This year they're building an
indoor airgun range which he is also engineering and managing construction on.
Last year we had some logging done at camp so he had to manage that and we
slowly replanting that plus foresting our fields.
Then the shooting, he's been pretty competitive and theres lots of that all
summer.
I'm glad, the first time he retired he quit smoking the same day and it was

I got a really nice deal on a 300CD.  It sat for SEVEN YEARS before I
realized that the statute of limitations had passed on it, and so I sold it
to somebody who made me an offer on it.

That's how you know you've overloaded yourself.  I was sad.  But I realized
that I myself had never even driven the car, my wife drove it home, 'cause
I was driving the truck/trailer with another car on it.  All I ever did was
move it 100 yards around back.  Once.  I started it _once_.  In seven
years.  It needed to go, but I still regret it.

Thanks, but there's no need to be sorry. I'm getting better about it. And
reading tales of accomplishment inspire me to do more!

For you to understand, take that feeling of looking at a sidelined car, and the
feeling of being in handcuffs and shackles (mental) every time you think about
going out and working on it.
Quite tormenting actually.
Be grateful you aren't afflicted.

Sorry, dude, I just can’t handle having things that “aren’t done”. Looking at
a sidelined car would just make me crazy.

There is a flip side to that, and it’s being so focused on something like this
that everything else gets pushed aside. Not always a good thing.

OR, you have lots of projects on the go and some take a higher priority.
I have had a boat waiting for me for close to 7 years. I have done a bit
on it but not near enough to permit it to be used.
I may end up selling it and getting a different one rather than invest
the time in this one.
Part of the problem is that I have no place to put it at home so I
cannot work on it in evenings etc. It is at the lake and we are busy
with other things when we go out there - like mowing the grass and
repairing the cottage etc. I always seem to think I can do more than I
can and as I get older, it is getting worse because I am doing things
slower than I once did.

Classic projection mistake. You are projecting what you would do on the
seller. Never attribute to malice what can be explained by stupidity /
laziness.

The Truth is out there - you would need to put eyes and hands on the car to
really understand what's going on.

Good point.

That being said, I can’t begin to imagine the condition of the fuel system on
this car having sat for so many years. The pump isn’t the only thing that is
going to need replacement.

I just don’t understand the logic. Even putting the Martha stuff aside, do I
have unrealistic expectations? I can’t comprehend making that kind of an
investment and not even putting forth an effort to preserve or protect it,
knowing that in the long term it’s going to be worth far less if it
deteriorates.
