The cost of flex disks is totally irrelevant because a broken front one can
total the car when the driveshaft starts flailing around. There are some
pictures someplace of the trans area in a car where the
Mine let fly during rush hour traffic in the middle of 10 lanes. Swapped
it out on the side of the road. Not the best start I've had on a camping
trip.
On a side note, I kept wondering what people were yelling at me as they
drove by. Eventually I made it out, CRACK. Apparently I spent a few
hours
I assume this all applies to W123 cars as well? I do have a pretty
distinctive klunk especially on the 3/4 shift if I'm not really under
power when that happens Downshifts as well.

There should be zero play in a Flex Disk. By the time you notice any,
it's too late. Any visible cracking indicates replacement.

Yup, although the W123 ones last longer that W124 fronts.
Inspect carefully with good light -- ANY cracks or deformation around
the bolts holes or ANY signs that the metal parts have moved on the
rubber condems the disk.
