I just installed a new pad on my W116 on Sunday. I believe it has two benefits, one it quiets the engine noise a bit, also it insulates the paint from the heat of the engine (though in the summertime the heat of the sun is probably just as intense, so I'm not really sure how big a deal that is). I strongly suggest you use tape and plastic sheeting to protect any areas you don't want to ruin the paint on... Once sprayed the adhesive will melt into the paint by design to achieve adhesion. It's worth the extra effort also to drape the engine and wheelwells, fenders, etc. FWIW, Grant... AZ... I tried that. The pad disintegrated after a year or so. The glue bead is still there. Maybe the pad was 30 years old in the box. Car runs fine without. Yes 3M make the recommended product. LN will hold, but it makes a terrible mess for whoever changes the hood pad next. The 3M stuff is by far the best way to go. As mentioned previously, just be sure to cover all painted surfaces, as it will damage paint it comes in contact with. The super adhesive works great, I *think* its #90 but I could be wrong. The turbo pads used to have a foil area above where the turbo was located, but that might only be on the OE pads. Rusty probably knows... That's what I used on both my 124s - worked great. I only covered the engine and fenders with a sheet of plastic, then sprayed away. Yes, the pads for the 2.5 turbos had the foil patch. the pad for the '87 300D did not. Go figure. Yes 3M make the recommended product. They also make a lot of non-recommended product. Just make sure you use the right stuff. 3M makes spray 77 too, for example. I use that to hold on the vapor barriers in the doors. Hood pad? I used the heavy duty upholstery contact cement. Don't recall the number, it was 8088 or 8087, I think. One was light duty, the other heavy duty. Follow the instructions and for G-d's sake, don't get any on the paint!
