What's with the issue of using green antifreeze in diesels and aluminum
heads? I had my antifreeze changed and I said to the mechanic that I heard
that I should not be using the green stuff re the aluminum head. He picks
up the A/F container and read that it was safe for these heads.

Green has a pH of 11 or so.
Hot aluminum and bases mix too well, resulting in erosion and pin-holing.
The proper stuff will have a pH of 7 and is buffered to stay that way.
I view commodity antifreeze as being a lot like oil filters; some time ago,

folks don't change it often enough. The MB/Zerex G-05 has a longer life so you
can go two, maybe three years between changes.
If you have ordinary green coolant then you have to change it yearly as the

Yep, I've only purchased the MB antifreeze once. NAPA carries it, made by
Valvoline, who supplies it to MB.

You can buy Zerex G-05 at the FLAPS. Same stuff.

Yep, and for the small price difference over green death, I stick with
what I know works.
I also have heard something about cylinder sleeve erosion of some kind, but

In any event, when you change to MB/Zerex G-05,
I don't know about the GM stuff, but I do know that combining green and gold is
a very bad thing.
We saw this on occasion with industrial engines, and if the engine is not
thoroughly rinsed out to remove all traces of the old coolant, damage will
almost always occur.

Honestly - I think you have hit the issue right on the head - Replace. If
your changing your fluid every 2 years - I don't think it will ever be an
issue. When I was in college and a little later my wife and I had a 1985

That will help, but it's best to flush, run the system with fresh water, flush
again, and fill.
It won't completely remove the old coolant, but will lower the concentration
levels to insignificant amounts.
Ideally, if you can pull the block drain and flush you'll get nearly all of it
out.
Open the block drain. Every Benz has one. May be pretty stuck if
it's had green coolant in it for an extended period.

FSM says to install fitting at upper radiator hose for a water source (garden
hose), install a thermostat that is forced open, open the block drain, and
start the engine to flush the coolant.

I guess you could then connect a hose and flush it. But with

sure there will effectively be no coolant left.

Once it looked like water I gave it a little lick, and was
surprised how sour it still was. So I kept flushing until
it tasted more like water too. Did not consume any, rinsed
and spit afterwards. Why tax the buffering of the new incoming
coolant by putting
