I had no idea how close the post was, you could reach out and touch it from the
edge of the track. I can't imagine not having 'hockey glass' on the track side
of those posts.
I saw an article in the paper that a lot of people complained that the
TV network showed it several times. I think it is on utubers too, my
wife said she saw it. I did not watch it, I kinda have an idea of what
hitting a metal pole at 90mph might look like.

My 190E 1985 2.3 4cyl. auto. Was only in fair shape when I got it home.
The first thing was the timing chain, single row, so worn out that it
was rattling the chain tensioner. The cam gear had lost all of the
sprocket tips so badly that I expected it to skip out of time at any second.
Dunno, at one point I researched an early '84 2.3l and it had a lower
(numerically higher) rear end...

I agree, it makes no sense whatsoever to have those things right there
when the possibility of leaving the track at any speed is clearly a
possibility. I was thinking that mesh fencing, but those posts are so
close you would need a hard barrier as you mention; although, skidding

Based on the hulks residing in the PnP, these cars are not able to go

I continue to lust after the w126. Even the few hours in the POS SDL
were a delight, until it became a turd, ala Cinderella's pumpkin.

I agree, skiing in general can be dangerous for folks young enough
to think they cannot be hurt. I wrapped my self around a large pine

I think the ultimate 123 is a 126. I mean, why not? They're the same
price as 123s now, and have more room, a better ride, bigger brakes,
better passive safety, I would guess, and I think they handle about
the same if not better, and don't give up much if anything in mileage

The OM 603 is a much better engine -- much more power, smoother, and
less hassle (other than cracked heads, and OM 617's crack too, if
less often).

While it is tempting to think that a W123 will protect you against everything,
make no mistake that no car designed in the 70s is any match even for much
smaller modern cars.
