2010-01-04 Thread LarryT
I love my '91 also - but I've come to believe the motor mounts ay need to be
replaced every 100K mi or so.

The engine should be silent with no vibration at idle.

re your fuel mileage - Ha! and Honda Camry drivers brag about 28mpg! ;-)

The W124's are awesome cars - from what I've heard, the gas models are
pretty good also.

In the 1 year, 8 months since I got the car from Kaleb, it's been driven
11,625 miles, burned 367.6 gals. for 31.62 mpg. Total miles today are
338,265. It's burning an average of 1 qt. of oil every 1,600 miles. I can
live with that. The chain stretch is 2.8 degrees.
It's currently down due to not charging the battery, despite only 5000
miles
on a new regulator and polished armature. A Bosch re-built alternator
looks

to be in it's future.
This is a great car!

Yup - both of trhem are fine cars! I think the 92 actually leaks more oil
than it burns - from the front crankshaft seal, and perhaps the injection
pump o-ring. The rest of the engine is dry and clean.

No affiliation, etc:

I wonder which is correct on the mileage... 900,024 or 9,000,024?
Anyway - no photos on the auction listing, but here's some of the
text. Located in Ocean Springs, MS.

1992 Mercedes Benz 300-D Turbo, 90,00024 miles. Diesel fuel. the
motor is in excellant condition, Body is in excellant condition,
however the front of the car was hit and the air bag deployed, needs
new bumper and airbag. I have the radiator out of the car as well as
the transmition cooling coil both are in good shape. I had to remove
them so I could get to the front bumper brackets they need to be
straighten out. I can start the car and the motor run great and the
transmition is in great shape. The car is loud due to a exaust leak.
To make a long story short, the car could be driven anywhere with just
a little work.

Current bid = $100. This has Kaleb written all over it, along with
SuperTurbo Project Car...

I saw a funny thing on a W201 forum a while back, it was
a Smoke Silver 16v with vanity plate that said NOTGOLD.
I guess too many people complimented him on his gold MBZ.

that one actually has similar mileage to mine, but they say nothing about
maintenance history or major repairs. Did I mention that the mechanic put

(Shameless plug) The mechanic who sold it to me does great work - his name
is Aaron and his shop is called MB Classic in West Chester OH (near
Cincinnati). His number is 513-870-0014, if anyone needs work or is
interested in any cars he has. Last I saw, among other cars he had a 1984
300TD that was a gray-market import that was around $3000 or something.
Cloth seats, speedo/odo in kilometers, Euro plates, the works.

Jim,

Does the 1994/95 'facelifted' trunk on the 124 look any better to
you? I think it looks a LOT nicer than the 1986-93 versions. Note that
from 1991-93 (I think), there was an insert panel that makes the early
ones look almost like the 94/95.

The trapezoidal opening and matching lights are the first thing I
noticed when I first saw a 124 as a car-crazy teenager, and to me are
by far the best feature of the car's styling! I prefer 124 sedans to
wagons for this very reason.

In fact, I happen to think (and I'm sure Jim will disagree strenously
here), that straight-across trunk lids, especially those with
pronounced curved edges leading down from the decklid to the seal (as
on a BMW 2002), look silly. Like the car is pulling a pirate's

R, matey! My faaavorite feature.

The low-access trunks, in order to give you enough clearance
to actually get into the things, open to near vertical. Which
means that the trunk opening can't be too big or you wouldn't
be able to reach it to close it. Which makes in all for a
nasty squatty little hole of a trunk with a limp-wristed
tiny little lid with an awkward closing action. Ugh.

Low-access also means that crap will roll out of it if you
ever need to leave the lid open to carry something large.
Double-ugh.
