Re: [MBZ] 2003 Mercedes-Benz sentra,$10,000
The thing intrigued me, it’s sorta my style. Popped over to my local this eve to listen to some tunes and have a nosh and a brew or two. The former proprietor, an Irish guy sold out and is moving to Montana. He had a short school bus parked out back. He and his GF each have one they are outfitting as campers. It was unclear why they have 2 but whatever. I kinda like the idea but it got me thinking about doing it on a bigger scale with this thing. Probably not as easy to park as a short bus though. --FT Sent from iPhone > On May 8, 2021, at 7:35 PM, G Mann via Mercedes wrote: > > Mercedes makes the chassis, suspension, rear end, and body along with all > the wiring and controls. Mercedes makes the chassis, suspension, rear end, and body along with all the wiring and controls. To import the bus into the USA, it has to have a certain portion of the components that are "Made in America", so using a USA made Detroit Diesel engine, and a USA made Allison transmission meets the qualifications with final assembly done here in the USA. Mercedes gets to have a piece of USA bus market share, Detroit and Allison gets to sell engines and transmissions [no mention is made that the bulk of Detroit engines are now cast and forged in China, and Allison sub components are "made elsewhere" also... Final assembly is done on USA soil.. thus, regulations are met. Mechanics are well advised to stock both Metric and SAE wrenches and fittings..there are plenty of both. I even have the rare "Big freaking hammers" in both metric and SAE ;)) On Sat, May 8, 2021 at 12:35 PM Allan Streib via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > Hm, what part does Mercedes make? Re: [MBZ] 2003 Mercedes-Benz sentra,$10,000
Setra, not Sentra The Setra bus company and Mercedes are joined at the hip. Drive engine is a 60 series Detroit [very solid engine with millions of miles of successful history in Semi Tractors and Buses] Allison transmission B500R is the same transmission that is used in heavy haul trash trucks and other workhorse applications where they are abused every hour, of every day, and keep giving back. The "R" at the end of the B500R means the transmission is equipped with a "Retarder" feature, which saves brakes by using the transmission hydraulic pressures to slow down. That feature is controlled by a small lever on the right side of the steering wheel, you pull up progressively on the lever to activate more resistance for slowing down... Much like downshifting a manual transmission to use engine braking [which you do not have with the diesel engine. Since I own one with the same configuration, I'm very familiar with it's functions and features.. The only difference is mine is a Detroit V8 [8V92, 8 cyl, V configuration, 92 cubic inch displacement each cylinder], same transmission, same body and wheel base. 52 passenger seats, TV's and a bathroom for the Pax. It's a rear engine diesel pusher configuration, so you can't "put in a rear door" That area is full of engine and transmission.. [about 9,000 lbs worth]. Upper deck is all passenger seating, the baggage bay doors on the lower deck are "huge" ... This is the same chassis that is also configured as a double decker bus all over Europe. [100 paying customers]. Jump on it... it will make one heck of a Class A motorhome.
