Re: [MBZ] 280SE resto cost

2005-11-25 Thread Hendrik Riessen
The biggest costs are usally labour, so if you have access to the equipment
and have the skills to do the work then there is a good chance of making
money. There are other factors such as the purchase price of the vehicle to
be restored and having good contacts to get parts at the right price but
there are very few cars that are worth restoring.
Example: in todays paper there is a 78 450SEL advertised which cost
AU$20,000 to restore and the seller wants AU$7,200 ono

Given the current fuel prices I doubt that he/she will get the asking price.

you are absolutely correct. I helped a guy thru a restoration of a 280SE
cabr. and it was $60k almost 20 years ago! Course that was when classic
car

prices were going crazy and he thought he'd get his money back. Shortly
after he finished the prices started to slide -

Making money (or just breaking even) on the restoration of old cars is a
tricky situation --and is often a losing proposition.

after which you'll have saved up the $20 G or so it will take for a
decent
restoration
job...

It will be closer to four times that much. You did say restoration and
not

fix-up didn't you?
