You should be able to test the relay without it being in the car.
Energizing it should result in power being transferred to the pin that
you need it to be transferred to in order to make the glow plugs hot. A
relay is just a switch.

Re: [MBZ] 300D 2.5 Glow Plug Relay

2023-05-15 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
Ok so one is indeed the ground. How do I check to see if ground is working.
Kaleb said to jumper it to another known ground but how do I do that when the
connector connects everything together? Jumper every contact in the connector
with every corresponding pin on the relay? That is technically challenging to
do.

Re: [MBZ] 300D 2.5 Glow Plug Relay

2023-05-15 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
Thank you Fred. This is very helpful. I tested all the glow plugs at the glow
relay connector and they all check out. I’m not sure how to test the system
leaving one or another pin disconnected since the connector connects them all
together. Would I have to rig jumpers between each connector hole and its
corresponding pin?

One would have to be. Electronics, _all_ electronics, works in circuits.
As in: innie _and_ outie. There is no yin without yang, etc.

Check them all, make no assumptions.

Generally, in these cars, there are a few major ground points where all
the brown wires come together. If one of those points starts to go bad,

Re: [MBZ] 300D 2.5 Glow Plug Relay

2023-05-14 Thread Frederick Moir via Mercedes
Dimitri.
 FWIW found this.
I'm not familiar with that glow relay part number but I'll assume the
connectors are compatible with MB passenger car harnesses and it's an
afterglow relay. Forget the wire colors and check for pin numbers either on
the relay itself or on the connector. The numbers should correspond between
relay and connector pins. Here's the pin list for a 90-91 300D 2.5:

pin 1 = +12V when key switch in run to initiate preglow cycle (W124 = hot
side of fuse 7)
pin 2 = +12V when key switch in start to terminate preglow cycle (W124 =
NSS)
pin 3 = +12V to gauge cluster glow indicator
pin 4 = ground
pin 5 = blank
pin 6 = signal from glow temp sensor by water pump to determine preglow and
afterglow cycle times

Assuming each glow plugs test between 0.7- and 1 ohm at the glow relay
connector, leave pin 2 disconnected then see if you get the max preglow
cycle of ~30 seconds. I don't know how the glow relay behaves when there is
no temp sensor.

If this gets to be too much work, a 617 pencil type glow relay should work
for you since afterglow isn't much of a benefit in the tropics if you have
healthy glow plugs.

Re: [MBZ] 300D 2.5 Glow Plug Relay

2023-05-14 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
So I’m thinking that maybe the ground to the relay is the problem or that there
is an ecm issue. The relay gets power but doesn’t put out power to the glow
plugs. But where is the relay grounded? The three connections are the power lug
to the battery, the harness to the glow plugs and the harness going to the
ignition. The harness going to the ignition has 5 wires. One gets power when
ignition is turn to on position. I don’t know what the other 4 do. Could one be
a ground? I assume some go to an ecm. Could a bad ecm be telling the gp relay
not to send a signal to the plugs? I’m about ready to give up and send this car
to a mechanic!

Yes my car has three connections as you describe. Big plug to glow plug, cable
to battery and small plug. Small plug corresponds to 5 pins on relay. One
connection on the plug is live only when ignition is turned on so I presume
that is the ignition on.

On my W116, if I know the engine is warm enough (e.g. after fueling or other
short stop) I won't wait for a full glow cycle. Ususally the glow light goes
out when I start the car, but occasionally it doesn't and it stays lit until
the cycle times out.

Ahh so the “activator” might not be working even if power is going through the

Used to be there were THREE connections to the relay:
A big plug that went to the glow plugs, a big cable that
went to the battery, and a small plug that was command
and control. The first two are Duh!, but they all need to
be working correctly, or you don't get a good start.

IIRC there was an ignition-on signal, a start signal, and
a dash lamp signal. Ignition-on started the GP timer,
start-release stopped the glow plugs, and the light was
the light.

Not sure exactly what your car has. Check the car schematic.

Get a wire and connect one end to the power coming into the relay then stick
the other end on each pin in succession and see if you get power/heat to that
particular plug. If the plugs get power you’ll know the problem is with the
relay. If the plugs don’t heat up then there is some other issue.

Ok so in addition to the wire that goes to the relay power lug, there is a

position. I’m guessing, therefore, that there is signal from key switch? So
I’m guessing that if there is power to the relay and there is signal from the
key switch but there is no power output from the relay at the five pins that go
to the corresponding glow plugs that the relay is bad. But this is a new relay.
I realize that a new relay could also be defective but I just don’t buy it.
What could be going on here?

2023-05-12 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
I’m not sure how to check for that. There is constant power at the lug on the
relay. With the ignition in the on position there is no power at any of the 5
pins on the relay that go to their respective glow plugs.
I inspected the chaffed harness and while there are some exposed wires where
the insulation has rubbed off, the wires appear to be intact and not obviously
shorting on anything.
I’m at a loss here.

Check for broken solder in the pins and wires in the connector. It’s possible
the keyswitch is bad too, although unlikely.

Have someone operate the key switch while you listen for the relay to close.
If it does, investigate why the glow plugs aren’t getting hot, if it doesn’t,
make sure the coil i the relay is getting 12V and figure out why not.

The picture of the guy measuring 408V 3 phase with a bare left hand and

Yeah but I never saw that one go 50% off.
I don't know that I've ever seen it substantially discounted.

Re: [MBZ] 300D 2.5 Glow Plug Relay

2023-05-11 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
I went to Ace hardware and got a test lamp. The relay has power. I then tested
a singular glow plug and it had no power so I proceeded to inspect the harness
from the relay to the plugs and found that it was chafed and had visible
conductor material. If the wire to one or even some of the plugs was affected
then there would still be some glowing action but there is none. The glow plug
light would do some thing like not turn on and then once the car starts, turn
on for so many seconds. Therefore I suspect that the ground wire is shorted. Is
it worth it to try to repair the harness? Should I try to find a new harness?
