Re: [MBZ] 300D 2.5 Glow Plug Relay
Ok so one is indeed the ground. How do I check to see if ground is working. Kaleb said to jumper it to another known ground but how do I do that when the connector connects everything together? Jumper every contact in the connector with every corresponding pin on the relay? That is technically challenging to do. Re: [MBZ] 300D 2.5 Glow Plug Relay
Thank you Fred. This is very helpful. I tested all the glow plugs at the glow relay connector and they all check out. I’m not sure how to test the system leaving one or another pin disconnected since the connector connects them all together. Would I have to rig jumpers between each connector hole and its corresponding pin? Re: [MBZ] 300D 2.5 Glow Plug Relay
Dimitri. FWIW found this. I'm not familiar with that glow relay part number but I'll assume the connectors are compatible with MB passenger car harnesses and it's an afterglow relay. Forget the wire colors and check for pin numbers either on the relay itself or on the connector. The numbers should correspond between relay and connector pins. Here's the pin list for a 90-91 300D 2.5: pin 1 = +12V when key switch in run to initiate preglow cycle (W124 = hot side of fuse 7) pin 2 = +12V when key switch in start to terminate preglow cycle (W124 = NSS) pin 3 = +12V to gauge cluster glow indicator pin 4 = ground pin 5 = blank pin 6 = signal from glow temp sensor by water pump to determine preglow and afterglow cycle times Assuming each glow plugs test between 0.7- and 1 ohm at the glow relay connector, leave pin 2 disconnected then see if you get the max preglow cycle of ~30 seconds. I don't know how the glow relay behaves when there is no temp sensor. If this gets to be too much work, a 617 pencil type glow relay should work for you since afterglow isn't much of a benefit in the tropics if you have healthy glow plugs. Re: [MBZ] 300D 2.5 Glow Plug Relay
Used to be there were THREE connections to the relay: A big plug that went to the glow plugs, a big cable that went to the battery, and a small plug that was command and control. The first two are Duh!, but they all need to be working correctly, or you don't get a good start. IIRC there was an ignition-on signal, a start signal, and a dash lamp signal. Ignition-on started the GP timer, start-release stopped the glow plugs, and the light was the light. Not sure exactly what your car has. Re: [MBZ] 300D 2.5 Glow Plug Relay
Get a wire and connect one end to the power coming into the relay then stick the other end on each pin in succession and see if you get power/heat to that particular plug. If the plugs get power you’ll know the problem is with the relay. If the plugs don’t heat up then there is some other issue. —FT Sent from my iPad > On May 13, 2023, at 8:57 AM, Dimitri Seretakis wrote: > > How do I jumper around the relay? Re: [MBZ] 300D 2.5 Glow Plug Relay
Check for broken solder in the pins and wires in the connector. It’s possible the keyswitch is bad too, although unlikely. Have someone operate the key switch while you listen for the relay to close. If it does, investigate why the glow plugs aren’t getting hot, if it doesn’t, make sure the coil i the relay is getting 12V and figure out why not. > On May 11, 2023, at 1:48 PM, Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes > wrote: > > So I replaced the GP relay on the 1990 300D 2.5T but it’s still not glowing. > Light does not come on at all. Re: [MBZ] 300D 2.5 Glow Plug Relay
I went to Ace hardware and got a test lamp. The relay has power. I then tested a singular glow plug and it had no power so I proceeded to inspect the harness from the relay to the plugs and found that it was chafed and had visible conductor material. If the wire to one or even some of the plugs was affected then there would still be some glowing action but there is none. The glow plug light would do some thing like not turn on and then once the car starts, turn on for so many seconds. Therefore I suspect that the ground wire is shorted. Is it worth it to try to repair the harness? Should I try to find a new harness?
