I found myself on there with a mid '90s Tunderbird in front and a Toyota 4wd pickup beside me. The guy in the Thunderbird was having a tough time, every time he gave it some gas the back end would break free and slam into the barrier between our lane and opposing traffic. The Toyota was having an equally tough time, he'd pointed his truck up the hill and was crabbing sideways up the road. I was having no difficulty at all, I had the 190D in 2nd and was idling up the hill. Finally the Thunderbird spun out, I nudged the go-pedal and navigated around him and just behind the Toyota. As I passed him the Toyota finally lost it and slid down the hill into the Thunderbird effectively blocking the entire road. I gave the 190D a little more go, grabbed third and never saw another vehicle behind me the rest of the way home. I already knew snow tires were worth it but after that I was completely sold. Thats with the cheapest no-name brand snow tires the tire store had, I can only imagine what real good snows are like. -Curt On 7/7/2014 10:12 PM, arche...@embarqmail.com wrote: Time for another tire string? When is he buying these tires? Winter tires are significantly worse on dry or wet roads than summer tires. They also wear out much faster. I've run winter tires in the summer and its decidedly un-optimal. Is his Pilot AWD? I'm with the others buy the best all season tires he can get and plan on staying off the road in inclement weather. Re: [MBZ] Another tire string?
In a climate like NC, I see snow tires, especially Hakkas, to be a serious waste of money. Any good quality all season radial should do. Spending the cash on snow tires would give you a marginal advantage, if that. Factor in the cost of tires, wheels, annual RR and storage and you are tossing money out the window IMHO. Re: [MBZ] Another tire string?
Don't get me wrong proper snow tires, even cheap ones are worth their weight in gold when you're seriously in the snow but for somebody who doesn't live in the snowbelt they're probably excessive. I remember one time when it started snowing around noon. At 2pm the state (MA) suggested companies let their employees go home and loads of people did so it was just like evening commute but slowed due to the snow. It was snowing probably an inch an hour which is pretty good and amounting faster than the plows could keep up. My 1 hour commute turned into a 4 hour slog. I had my '85 190D 5spd which had just gotten its first set of snow tires. The guys who have been to my house can tell you about the big S curve on Rt2 that climbs and leans to the left. -Curt From: WILTON wilt...@nc.rr.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Tuesday, July 8, 2014 10:17 AM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Another tire string? Dan The issue with the current crop of winter tires is not so much traction in snow but control on ice. I think, that back in the day, snow tires were about getting traction in snow. They were actually worse on ice than normal tires. The ice radials have softer compounds and more siping so the tire squirms a bit more and hangs on better. We have Goodyear winter tires for my wife's Honda Accord and she says it makes a huge difference to braking and acceleration when the roads are icy. She also says the car handles better when we switch back to the regular wheels and tires come spring. If one keeps the car for any length of time or obtains another compatible vehicle, the additional set of tires will not be an additional expense because the summer tires will last longer too. If they salt the roads when it gets icy, then it will also save the aluminum wheels if one has the winter tires mounted on a set of steel wheels. And, of course, if it prevents one accident, it will be well worth it. Re: [MBZ] Another tire string?
I agree with Tim - I live near Richmond Va - maybe 100 miles N of Raliegh and our winters are very similar to theirs. Last winter we had several days of snow and the schools closed even before it started falling! one day they closed the next day based on the weatherman prediction - he was off by about 12 hours so the kids had a day in the sunshine - but being a weatherman is like being a baseball player - hit .333 and you're a star! Of course not the predictions are made using 6+ weather predicting programs - and they still miss it! And they want us to believe they can tell us what it's going to do in 100 years? LarryT Curt wrote: Don't get me wrong proper snow tires, even cheap ones are worth their weight in gold when you're seriously in the snow but for somebody who doesn't live in the snowbelt they're probably excessive. For Raleigh does he need winter tires? how sbout aggressive tread all season radials? Possibly with a M S rating? Raleigh gets very little snow.
