Larry,
YOu can pick up cheap(way less than $100) portable CD players with an
anti-shock/skip feature that prevents that annoying problem. I've seen
them

as low as 29 bucks at Wally World.

When you say Walkman, I assume you're talking about a CD player? I
tried that also and the skipping was so bad I couldn't enjoy the discs.
I

hope a iPod or MP3 player will be a lot more stable. Do you have any

Those little cassette tape with a wire things work really well for
that,
are dirt cheap, and no mods needed.

That's what I have now. The entire system: Sony discman, cassette
adapter, car, and home power adapters was $5 at the thrift store,
and all works. I love surfing the trailing edge!

But the system is awkward with all the cables, the Alpine makes
a lot of transport noise, and the audio path is easily overdriven
into distortion. Something a bit more integrated would be a nice
solution, but probably will never happen.

Larry - most of the large capacity MP3s (over 20 Gig) are mini-hard
drives;

small ones, typically 2-3 Gig are solid state memory.
I've had no problem with the Phillips 30GB MP3 player, rough roads or

I did say Discman, Sony's particular walkabout CD player.

This particular one has a switch-selectable read-ahead buffer that
dramatically improves its shock resistance. Presumably it was
switchable because either they didn't entirely trust it, or it
cuts battery life. It takes a pretty heinous bump to faze it.
I think I did OK for $5!

My wife bought a friend's iPod, but I have no experience with it.
She bought it to record rehearsal sessions. (It has a clip-on

upgrading.) She's only just now getting around to trying it out.

Re: [MBZ] Audio mods

What year is your MB? Even though it only says Mercedes on the radio, it is
very likely a Becker.

I agree having a plug input added to the stereo for the iPod/MP3 like Werner
had done is preferable to using

the cassette with a wire option.

I wrote Becker-Harman on Monday to inquire about having a MP3/iPod input
plug added to my head unit and have not heard back so I may call them
today - will let ya'll know what happens -

Mr Khan - the Becker Grand Prix was widely used in Mercedes and a typical
one can be seen in eBay item number 230103716173 - you can search ebay for
that number to see a image of it, If yours is similar, it's a Becker.

HiThe Griffin FM adapter for the Ipod  was a disappointment purchase;
it

transmits a weak output and then picks up the odd static sounds too . The
'tape with a wire' gives a much cleaner sound.

Would like to have a plug in aux lead for the ipod with a discreetly run
cable going to the CD connector plug in the back of the unit which
states, 'Mercedes Benz' on the cassette insert lid , no Becker name
indication .

computer useage where we had a computer input clerk who typed the data into

Re: [MBZ] Audio mods

2007-03-14 Thread Curt Raymond

Actually you can get a terrabyte at home, get 2 500GB drives and boom, you're
there.

We made video editing hardware and software, I usually say we make the things
that make TV and movies.
192TB is 666.66 DAYS (16,000 hours) of DV video which is what most news
programming is made with. And yet even with all that space customers are
screaming for more.
One of the big TV networks in NYC that I've been to has 20,000 hours of storage
right now (3 80TB systems) and is looking to up the 80TB systems to 192TB
EACH... Of course they work in HD so thats actually only 9600 hours for them,
still thats 400 days...
It boggles the mind. When I did my last video project in college we were each
given a 4GB drive to work from. Thats about 20 minutes total video, you learned
to be very choosy about your shots as you worked.

Larry - most of the large capacity MP3s (over 20 Gig) are mini-hard
drives;
small ones, typically 2-3 Gig are solid state memory.
I've had no problem with the Phillips 30GB MP3 player, rough roads or
sitting still.

Hi Jim,
When you say Walkman, I assume you're talking about a CD
player? I
tried that also and the skipping was so bad I couldn't enjoy the
discs.

I
hope a iPod or MP3 player will be a lot more stable. Do you have any
experience with either of those? This will be my 1st experience
with an

MP3
or iPod player.Actually I'm not positive about how they work - I
assume
they have a harddrive where music, data voice is stored? Is that
close?

Will a MP or iPod be more stable than a CD player?
TIA -

Those little cassette tape with a wire things work really well for that,
are dirt cheap, and no mods needed.

I've toyed with the idea of tapping into the guts of the old
Alpine that's in the Frankenheap in order to hook the CD (or
my wife's iPod) into it. I like the funky old Alpine, it sort
of looks like it belongs there, as anything much newer would
not, and when you use the cassette the radio antenna does not
extend. The cassette also auto-ejects when the key goes off.
It's also theft-proof. (Who would want it?)

Another project, just what I need...

Re: [MBZ] Audio mods

2007-03-13 Thread Werner Fehlauer
Harman-Becker in Upper Saddle River, NJ does indeed mod the standard M-B
radios for just that - an auxiliary MP3/iPod input, that then interrupts the
radio's audio path and inputs the aux signal. No visible mods, and all the
audio controls of the radio still work as usual. Just remember that you
might need the code if your radio has the anti-theft system, since the
radio has to come out of the car for them to mod it.

Larry,
YOu can pick up cheap(way less than $100) portable CD players with an
anti-shock/skip feature that prevents that annoying problem. I've seen them
as low as 29 bucks at Wally World.
