If you change something in the post -- maybe just change the order of the
pictures -- you can (could) post in different venues. I changed the title
of my posting of our Peterbilt 386 so I could post it in different places.
(A fellow near San Antonio was the one who bought it.)

it once and got a duplicate listing warning so I'm not sure how they do it but 
they do, or did anyway...

You are only supposed to post the car once then you can renew it every few 
days. It looks like now with the paid ads you can’t renew it anymore to push it 
to the top

should be going for scrap that somebody thinks they're going to actually get 
paid for.
It might also weed out the crazy cross posting or over posting. When I was 
shopping for my TDI there was a guy posting his same 7 or 8 cars twice a day...

Mercedes site:facebook.com   ?

Not successfully. I don't use the FB application on my phone, I use the mobile 
Firefox browser to search FB marketplace.  It truly sucks.

Actually many of the cities I search had no new ads at all for MB in the last 
day or 1. The larger cities might have had a dozen if that.

I also noticed the categories he has for searching are:

   1928-1976 Mercedes's
   2008-2018 C63 AMG
   2010-2018 E63 AMG
   2012-2018 G63 AMG
   2012-2018 SL63 AMG

The categories certainly leave out a lot of years those on this list
consider important.

my personal objection is this:

In order to even see your listings on Facebook, I am required
to JOIN facebook. Immediately upon joining facebook my entire
contact with the internet is suddenly overwhelmed with popups
and trash generated by my contact with facebook. Something I
very much do not desire. Suddenly, I have emails from companies
and people who I have no desire to have contact with ONLY by
virtue of having ONCE made contact with, and "joined" facebook.
It then takes nothing short of overwhelming effort to remove
yourself from all those "contact points" that have been
generated without your agreement.

It is, in my considered opinion, the social and electronic
equal to deliberately giving yourself herpes.

$1.99/month is easy to justify.

Understand that Google has an agreement not to scrape Craigslist.  That means 
that Google searches will not typically bring up Craigslist listings unless 
they got scraped from another site, that is, someplace that had a link to a

Did the same thing with my triple slider doors that open on to our lanai.  A 
couple of the bearings in the door rollers were failing and they made some 
awful noise. Since replacement involves removing the doors to get at the 
rollers, I had to wait until the weather was milder to do it.

Now they glide smoothly without a sound.  Good for another 10-15 years for an 
hour’s work and maybe $30 worth of parts.

Did the same with the pocket door between the bathroom and master bedroom.  The 
payoff was even greater since I am up at 5:00 and now closing the door doesn’t 
make any noise….

It’s the simple fixes that are often the most rewarding.

Having put a new transmission into the wagon at about 185k, I can say that
delays are not normal, in any gear, even if it runs for years like that.

Its great to see how long things will last. Very parsimonious. But also
comforting in a 30 year old machine to know your transmission is newish.

The things you use every day should be nice, in proportion to their usage
and the budget. Having a transmission that functions perfectly is
satisfying every time I use the car. Sort of like having a nice hazet oil
plug wrench, I imagine.

less violent.  All gears work well enough.  Odo is non-op., speedo is good, as 
is tach.  Seats work for the most part, windows not that much.

of different springs in the kit that and it tells you which springs to use to

only made it worse.  I've played with the cable, modulator, and orifice in
the past but only achieved modest improvements.
I think I'll do these k1/2 springs if I ever change fluid again.

Based on my findings, the 126 270 04 35 and 05 35 are for the 722.4xx K2 
accumulator, not the 722.3xx.

Everything I’ve seen suggests that the 126 270 44 77 spring kit fits both the 
K1 and K2 accumulators in the 722.3xx transmission.  This was stated in the WIS 
back in the late 1990s.

At 250k, your SDL is just a pup; well, maybe an adolescent. I figger at 
200k it is just broken in. (pup)   My first SDL was acquired at 175k and 
although it was rusty when I bought it, I drove it another 240k miles.  
The whole time it was "slow to go into reverse"   The other 3 have been 
similar.  My advice is don't worry about it.  Don't fix it if it ain't 
broke.  Unless the delay becomes noticeably longer, maybe over 5 sec, I 
would not worry about it.  It is a great car!  Drive it and enjoy it.   
My current rustbucket runs great at somewhere around 500K.


If you must have an "expert" check it, the only one I'd trust is Sun 
Valley, in Sun Valley, CA.  I know of nobody in North or South America 
who is as good as Mark is, and he is very kind.

This is a very interesting thread as I have an '87 300SDL with about 
250K miles.  The tranny does seem sluggish getting into 4th., and also 
slow going into reverse.  I have read about the reverse syndrome and 
have been very leery about it failing me for some time now.  However, 
with this new information there is a glimmer of hope.  I would also 
like some further info and details that I can use to have a qualified 
tranny service operator to view and do the necessary repairs.  Thanks 
very much for any info you can forward.

Gerry,

It’s not a B2 piston you need, it’s the K1 and K2 valves. They’re 
$5/each from a dealer and take all of maybe 3-4 minutes to replace 
when you’ve got the pan off the transmission.


I just did mine on the 300D, and it shifts like a totally different 
car. The 2-3 isn’t “stacked” like it used to be and the 3-4 comes in 
later and is smooth.


I can get you the part number if you want it along with some 
instructions. The parts are the same for both, which makes it even 
simpler.

The k1/k2 spring upgrade will not affect reverse. When reverse takes a while to 
engage it is simply worn out. On the older transmissions there was a bolt that 
could be tightened for the slow reverse issue.

This is a very interesting thread as I have an '87 300SDL with about 250K 
miles.  The tranny does seem sluggish getting into 4th., and also slow going 
into reverse.  I have read about the reverse syndrome and have been very leery 
about it failing me for some time now.  However, with this new information 
there is a glimmer of hope.  I would also like some further info and details 
that I can use to have a qualified tranny service operator to view and do the 
necessary repairs.  Thanks very much for any info you can forward.

I just picked up a ton of stuff from the free car fellow.  I pick that up 
Saturday morning.

He had the ATSG 722.3.4 service manual.  I am going to read all about them so  
I can be edjumukated though not likely to actually do work.  The new to me SD 
has a good trans, as does the spare engine and trans included.  Same thing with 
the SDL.

I think that was the not a delay into drive. The 3 seconds into 
reverse is a bit too much as 2 of my 83 300Ds and my daughter's 
81 SD all go in in about 1 second. I did some more looking and 
from what I could find it seems the only transmissions that have 
a reverse band that can be adjusted are the older ones with only 
4 bolts holding the pan on from then on all the ones with the 6 
bolts have the reverse done internally with a clutch pack and the 
1st gear is now the band.


I agree with Dan that the K fixes will do a bit of change to the 
way the transmission shifts.

Your car is barely broken in. Short of a catastrophic failure, to go out
and try to find a back up drive train is false economy, as it's unlikely
you'll ever need it.

Now I certainly wouldn't discourage someone from trying to find a tired
OM617 they can disassemble and rebuild as a learning experience and
potential backup if ever needed, but to purposely seek a drive train as a
spare would be silly, in my opinion, not to mention a waste of resources.

My 350SDL just turned 269,000 miles. Compression is great, it doesn't leak
or burn oil, and other than having a little delay when engaging reverse,
everything is in great working order. As long as I maintain it well there's
no reason why it wouldn't go another 260k or more without major work.  I'm
not about to tie up coin in a spare engine or transmission when there's no
need.

IIRC there was issues with flaring between 3-4 that was fixed with spring

Actually, the accumulator spring in K1 will fix your 2-3 "stacked" shift, and 
replacing the accumulator spring in K2 will soften and slightly delay your 3-4 
shift.  You can do one or both, it's not mandatory to do both. For sure do K1, 
as it will make a noticeable difference in the 2-3 upshift.

normal for these transmissions, but mine will need 2 "Spring gudes" in order to

Manfred, that is what I was thinking as well. I did some research on the
rebuild and if I have good post one then the cost is not too bad. I will
think on it and keep my eyes peeled for a spare wagon. If it is a steal it
would be silly to pass it up.

That's not a delay. all of my cars have done that into drive all 
the time. The transmission in my TD has taken 3 seconds into 
reverse since it's been in there. Could be a band adjustment 
would take care of it. Anyone know where and how tight to adjust 
it? I don't have a manual for the transmission on a 123.

Now I certainly wouldn't discourage someone from trying to find a tired
OM617 they can disassemble and rebuild as a learning experience and
potential backup if ever needed, but to purposely seek a drive train as a

"serviced" and they put a couple quarts too much trans fluid in and ruined it. 
Then a "dealership" put a rotten transmission in. Hadta get the MB zone rep to

between 2 and 3; neither of which could be corrected by adjustment. 
Periodically I would decide to order a rebuilt transmission from Sun in 
California but never got around to it. Gradually I got used to slightly backing 
off the throttle when the transmission changed from 2 to 3 gear until I did it 
without thinking about it. By doing that the transmission shifted normally.
Now, about 17 years and 130,000 miles later, I'm still driving it the same way 
and will never get around to installing a rebuilt transmission although I might 
spend a little over $100 and install a new (B-2?) piston through a plate in the 
side of the transmission since I've been told that would correct the problem.
It is a 722.315 transmission.

said it had done it as long as he owned the car, and it’s done it for me as

additional 600,000 miles in addition to the already almost 300k on it now!
Hahaha! That would be amazing to be sure! I know there are OTR truckers
that get 1 million miles on their rigs, and I am guessing their diesels are
similar engineering wise as far as robustness goes...

Just a paradigm shift in thinking for me as I am part of the throwaway
generation and have been taught to replace my car every 80k miles, or 10
years at most!

Tommy's W140 is approaching 300k and still going strong despite the eldest 
son's lack of care (sorry, Tom!). I stay on top of him on maintenance, but he's 
not a good housekeeper. Guess he didn't get the Martha gene

#1 boy picked up the w140 with over 240k on the clock.  My SL came to me with 
203K.  The ‘yodas get sold off when they approach 200k, since they are still in 
really good condition, but at the bottom of the value curve.

Manfred, that is what I was thinking as well. I did some research on the
rebuild and if I have good post one then the cost is not too bad.  I will
think on it and keep my eyes peeled for a spare wagon.  If it is a steal it
would be silly to pass it up.

The transmission in my TD has had a delay going into reverse for 
over 5 years now more then 20k miles. I guess I'll have to get a 
rebuilt tranny right quick now.

These cars are built to a very different standard than you're used to.
While we all chuckle at the "million mile engine" claims in CL ads, there's
a lot more truth to that than many might believe.

Your car is barely broken in. Short of a catastrophic failure, to go out
and try to find a back up drive train is false economy, as it's unlikely
you'll ever need it.

Now I certainly wouldn't discourage someone from trying to find a tired
OM617 they can disassemble and rebuild as a learning experience and
potential backup if ever needed, but to purposely seek a drive train as a
spare would be silly, in my opinion, not to mention a waste of resources.

My 350SDL just turned 269,000 miles. Compression is great, it doesn't leak
or burn oil, and other than having a little delay when engaging reverse,
everything is in great working order. As long as I maintain it well there's
no reason why it wouldn't go another 260k or more without major work.  I'm
not about to tie up coin in a spare engine or transmission when there's no
need.

If I was you I would look for another engine for the TD even if 
it doesn't run. Get it real cheap and have it rebuilt. That's 
about $7000 or so but then you have an engine that will "run a 
million miles". ;-) Or at least you will know how a new engine 
runs and be the only one who has worked on it from new. You can 
do the same with the transmission for a lot less. I think around 
$1700 to $1900 or so from the place in California. At those 
prices I wouldn't wait as they will only go up.

Done it for over six years, according to the PO.  A non-issue as far as I'm 
concerned. All other shifts are crisp and on the money.

It got a Mann filter and Febi fluid change when I got it, and the pan was clean 
as was the magnet in it.  Fluid was fine and smelled good.

My 1983 300TD exhibited that behavior a few weeks before permanently losing
reverse + all forward gears in the Home Depot parking lot. You might want
to start shopping for a good used transmission to lug around in the trunk.

try to find a back up drive train is false economy, as it's unlikely you'll 
ever need it.

Now I certainly wouldn't discourage someone from trying to find a tired OM617 
they can disassemble and rebuild as a learning experience and potential backup 
if ever needed, but to purposely seek a drive train as a spare would be silly, 
in my opinion, not to mention a waste of resources.

My 350SDL just turned 269,000 miles. Compression is great, it doesn't leak or 
burn oil, and other than having a little delay when engaging reverse, 
everything is in great working order. As long as I maintain it well there's no 
reason why it wouldn't go another 260k or more without major work.  I'm not 
about to tie up coin in a spare engine or transmission when there's no need.

Staying on top of things is #1, if you let something stay broken the next time 
something breaks it has a major psychological effect...
I've got Angie's Golf nearly up to 100% and intend to keep it there. On the 
other hand my Jetta is pretty much at the point where I only fix what is 
absolutely required to keep it road worthy...

If you do proper maintenance and repairs, the wagon
should last your lifetime. The period for catastrophic failures
from manufacturing defects is long over. 

You just have to stay on top of things and use premium parts
for maintenance and repairs. Rust is not an issue for 
you, so no problem there.

I don't see a replacement engine as the way to go about that. If it needs it 
rebuild/repair what you've got. You know how its been treated so its a better 
platform for repair. A new to you engine comes with an unknown history...

The good news is... it is a very well made car that can last and last, if
you take good care of it.

I'm in a similar boat with my '95 E300, which has its own collection of
unique single-model-year parts (exhaust, IP, monovalve, ...).

Yes the wagon rear doors are different.
Probably best to get the whole wagon just in case. May need rear 
hatch, rear side windows, various trim strips, sliding roof, rear 
seats etc.

The motor is a Cali... I did do the egr and can delete already but lots of
air cleaner difference.

I am guessing that a donor 85 wagon is in my future. Hahaha!
