A few years back my buddy's indy Benz mech told him his front subframe
was cracked on his 79 450SL, should not be driven, and it was going to
cost like $2k to replace it. He called me from the mech asking what
should he do. Using list knowledge gleaned I suggested that this was a
recall item

If the TO fried the turbo (which they do often) and it is still in
there, MB will replace it and the turbo for free.
DO NOT take it out before checking with MB -- it's much more expensive
to do yourself!
The catalyst in the trap comes apart, and the ceramic shrapnel
produced by this

Belts off, no noise = aux equipment related
Had a weird noise in the ole TE a while back, turned out (banned word)

Check fluid, if it's low pump will whine or if it's run with low fluid it
will have air in the system which will make it whine. Usually adding fluid
will self correct the air problem. In any case, easy to check.

If the whine varies with engine load and not just engine speed, it's
the turbo (which is normal on my old Volvo TD, sounds a great deal
like a police siren a few blocks back). If it varies directly with
engine speed, I'd suspect the alternator -- quite often a dead battery
will kill and
an engine whine that kicks in around 1800 RPM.
A stripped transmission stator spline will whine, but at
idle. Easy to tell, off-the-line acceleration is abysmal,
and stall speed is low.
