Computer voice robo calls require special handling to bust their chops properly. At the end of the computer voice, there is always the: "For more information press "1" " . So, I press the required number, introduce myself as "FBI, Telephone Fraud Hotline, Agent XXX" and ask to speak with a supervisor immediately" If I get a supervisor, I impress them that they are in violation of the Federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act and subject to a fine of up to $5,000 per call violation for each unsolicited telephone call. I then ask for their exact location, employee number or identification, and request they connect me with the ranking company officer presently available In effect, I want to bust their chops as hard as possible. Which I do, at my own pleasure, and if possible, their cost. Just happens, I'm good friends with the local FBI AIC, so with his permission, I give the ranking company officer their address and his contact details... Should he wish to follow up. Re: [MBZ] Finally had enough of the 123 fakebook
Every day, I receive a number of "Robo Calls" on the phones, all of which are unlisted, and all which are filed with "do not call" list. In response to the calls, I started answering them using the following script: Rinn "FBI, ... Telephone fraud hotline. Agent Stoner. Almost always followed by a pregnant pause... then a very soft "click" as they hang up.. If anyone starts talking, I interrupt them with "You are in violation of the Federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act, and subject to a fine in the amount of up to $5,000 per such violation, please connect me to your supervisor immediately." Almost always followed by a pause and a hang up... Over the course of the past month, the number of "robo calls" has dropped to almost zero. We have the same thing going on in South Tampa. It’s a fairly compressed area that was populated with small bungalows built post WWII. Now they get razed and a vertical McMansion goes up in place of the bungalow on a very, very small lot. Nothing that I know of. The only personal information they want is your name, email address and the phone number you want to set up. "How Does Nomorobo Stay In Business? While the Nomorobo Landline service is free for consumers, businesses and public safety organizations pay to license our data. For consumers, robocalls are annoying. But, for businesses it costs them real money. And, for EMS systems (like 911), it could be a matter of life and death. These are the people that don't mind paying for the service and using it directly in their telephone equipment.” There’s your answer. -D > On Jun 25, 2019, at 8:14 PM, Craig via Mercedes wrote: > >> But I do recommend NomoRobo. Re: [MBZ] Finally had enough of the 123 fakebook
I use the NomoRobo service for the land line, and every time it gets a call that’s bogus I report it. I kid you not, within a couple of weeks with NomoRobo set up the calls stopped dead. It easily rang 3-4 times a day during the week when I was working from home, and since I set up NomoRobo it never rings. I had a rash of those “This is Microsoft tech support - can you check your computer? It’s got a virus” a few weeks ago, which I play out for a good 5-10 minutes if I can until they realize I’m yanking their chain and they yell expletives and hang up. I recognized the accent of one caller and quickly looked up a really, really offensive slur for their culture, which I used on them and then hung up. They tried calling me back 2-3 times, which I didn’t answer, of course. Guess I got them riled up. Hee. Turnabout is fair play, folks. But I do recommend NomoRobo. Don’t cost ‘nuthin and it’s easy to set up and use. My experience with it has been great. I understand it can be used on mobile lines as well. -D > On Jun 25, 2019, at 5:17 PM, Floyd Thursby via Mercedes > wrote: > > Autodialers just go down the numbers and place calls, a lot of them spoof the > inbound number. Autodialers just go down the numbers and place calls, a lot of them spoof the inbound number. I get 2-3/day that spoof my Houston number exchange, and others from Texas. The land line probably gets 20 a day, a lot of them spoofed. I got one a year or so ago from a friend's number, answered it (I never answer the land line, for some reason I was right by it when the call came in and saw the name) and it was some spam call. I am going to run for Congress based on 2 platforms: 1) using the full capabilities of National Technical Means to find and eliminate spam callers wherever they are on the planet: and 2) to abolish Daylight Savings or Standard Time or whatever it is that makes the clocks change. Everything else that Congress takes up can just happen without my involvement. Back to topic, some guy needed a "diesel expert" for his 220D in the Louisville area, someone pointed him to this kid as the expert as he had changed the oil in this guy's car. --FT On 6/25/19 4:27 PM, Craig via Mercedes wrote: On Tue, 25 Jun 2019 12:17:33 -0700 Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes wrote: Pi hole. Reinvent the wheel is an imbecile. His parts are pretty much junk that I can source at PnP for pennies on his asking price, and the gamble as to function is the same. I was looking for replacement OM617 for the SD last fall. He was pushing what were basically core returns for $1500. For a functioning motor he wanted $5k. I run NoScript, too, and, no, I am not amazed at the number of scripts which run. What is amazing is the numbers of levels of scripts. If I have a web page which I really want to see, I can select "Temporarily allow all this page." When I do that, often another batch of websites come up which want to run their own scripts. When I repeat the "Temporarily allow all this page", sometimes yet another batch of websites comes up. I occasionally have to do the "Temporarily allow all this page", four or five times. Grant, I saved your earlier comment about facebook, which I thought was classic: While as a business owner for most of my life I can appreciate the exposure given by a listing on Facebook, my personal objection is this: In order to even see your listings on Facebook, I am required to JOIN facebook. Immediately upon joining facebook my entire contact with the internet is suddenly overwhelmed with popups and trash generated by my contact with facebook. Something I very much do not desire. Suddenly, I have emails from companies and people who I have no desire to have contact with ONLY by virtue of having ONCE made contact with, and "joined" facebook. It then takes nothing short of overwhelming effort to remove yourself from all those "contact points" that have been generated without your agreement. It is, in my considered opinion, the social and electronic equal to deliberately giving yourself herpes. Now you will also want to set up your computer so any inadvertent contact from your computer to facebook and other non-desirable sites, whether from web beacons or something hidden in a particular web page's code, is prohibited. I found winhelp2002.mvps.org, which provides a script which modifies one's host file (the file which defines the addresses for specific web sites before your computer goes out on the web to a Domain Name Server to look for the site's address -- if the address is found in the host file, your computer does not go out on the web). The script on this web site adds to your hosts file over 14,000 web sites with which you do not want contact and sets it so your computer sends any requests to contact them to your systems "bit bucket" so they never your system. In addition to all that, I add my own definitions, which include all of the facebook, et al., URLs I know (perhaps there are more that I don't know -- it would be nice to be able to browse a Name Server's database): # Don't let requests for Facebook leave the system. # 127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com 127.0.0.1 facebook.com 127.0.0.1 connect.facebook.net 127.0.0.1 facebook.net 127.0.0.1 ads.facebook.com 127.0.0.1 ads.ak.facebook.com 127.0.0.1 apps.facebook.com 127.0.0.1 xx-fbcdn-01-01-lga1.facebook.com 127.0.0.1 business.facebook.com # Don't let requests for Pinterest leave the system. # 127.0.0.1 www.pinterest.com 127.0.0.1 pinterest.com 127.0.0.1 assets.pinterest.com # Don't let requests for Twitter leave the system. # 127.0.0.1 www.twitter.com 127.0.0.1 twitter.com 127.0.0.1 ads.twitter.com 127.0.0.1 ads-twitter.com 127.0.0.1 www.twittercounter.com 127.0.0.1 twittercounter.com # Block Shirley from seeing the Taste of Home order page, so # she won't order a new subscription of the magazine AGAIN! # 127.0.0.1 order.tasteofhome.com 127.0.0.1 www.shoptasteofhome.com 127.0.0.1 *.shoptasteofhome.com # Don't let requests for Google analytics leave the system. # From http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38=2453819 # 127.0.0.1 www.google-analytics.com 127.0.0.1 google-analytics.com 127.0.0.1 ssl.google-analytics.com 127.0.0.1 googleadservices.com 127.0.0.1 pagead.googlesyndication.com 127.0.0.1 pagead2.googlesyndication.com 127.0.0.1 domains.googlesyndication.com 127.0.0.1 adservices.google.com 127.0.0.1 video-stats.video.google.com 127.0.0.1 4.afs.googleadservices.com 127.0.0.1 imageads.googleadservices.com 127.0.0.1 imageads1.googleadservices.com 127.0.0.1 imageads2.googleadservices.com 127.0.0.1 imageads3.googleadservices.com 127.0.0.1 imageads4.googleadservices.com 127.0.0.1 imageads5.googleadservices.com 127.0.0.1 imageads6.googleadservices.com 127.0.0.1 imageads7.googleadservices.com 127.0.0.1 imageads8.googleadservices.com 127.0.0.1 imageads9.googleadservices.com 127.0.0.1 partner.googleadservices.com 127.0.0.1 www.googleadservices.com 127.0.0.1 apps5.oingo.com 127.0.0.1 www.appliedsemantics.com 127.0.0.1 service.urchin.com Hope that helps! Re: [MBZ] Finally had enough of the 123 fakebook
The reinventthewheel people are whack jobs and I can’t even begin to imagine are a long term profitable concern, in my opinion. I think it’s one of those “we think we have a gold mine and we want to share the wealth” deals with their constant offers to sell interest in the company. What this really means is “we don’t have a viable business or the cash to maintain one, so we need some suckers to step up and give us money”, I believe. I will defer to your comment about the “point and click” stuff. I am constantly amazed at the stuff I see on eBay for older cars like my W111 that the ask for a used part is two or three times the cost of a brand new one from Mercedes. Are people that lazy or stupid (or both?) that they can’t do a little due diligence to find this stuff? -D > On Jun 23, 2019, at 6:09 PM, Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes > wrote: > > Tell that to the reinventingthewheel dudes. > > I think there is a ton of value in making a website where people only have > to point and click to buy a used part.
