I bought a couple new ones, mounted one about 8 feet from the old one but at
the top of the stairs just inside the door where its handy to grab if the
kitchen is on

AHA! Googling the label, it's a 1940's Presto fire extinguisher that
is usually filled with chlorobromomethane. There seems to be a
possibility of cardiac arrest if you happen to inhale any of it...

Can't read the label. It is most likely a carbon tetrachloride fire
extinguisher. They were banned about 1960. It is possible that it
is a CO2, but those generally have a cone, and i didn't see any
evidence of a cone.
