Tank doesn't sit level and therefore isn't a constant shape. Dad's Jeep
Liberty was notorious for this, at 1/4 tank you need to look for gas NOW, its
got like 1/16 range left.

Low traffic volume means that nearly every intersection is a green light, and
the speed limit is 45 mph, so about optimum conditions for high mpg.

Well, it turns out that the miles since "reset" was not what I thought.
The reset occurred BEFORE I purchased the vehicle. Turns out that I have
driven only about 200 miles from the full fuel tank. The gauge is down a
little over 1/3, which corresponds with the 567 mile range of the car.
Today I went for a spin on I-270 up to Home Depot in Gaithersburg (22 miles
RT) and achieved 35.6 mpg, if you can believe the computer...

Do not assume that the gauge is linear - nor that the fuel remaining-range
left is accurate. Only experience will tell you, drive another couple
thousand miles, log every drop of fuel you pump, and you will find out
what's what.

2020-05-25 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Spend a few $$ (150) and buy an iCarsoft (or similar) scanner ffom Bezo and you
can see if there are any new or old codes showing related to the fuel sender.
This 211 I just bought has some stored codes related to that system. I need to
get a VMI to see if anything was ever done to it.

The first time I put gas in was weird, I couldn’t get the tank filled (per the
gauge) though it was acting like it was full, pump kept shutting off Then I
(actually) filled up again the other day and it seems fine. I don’t think it
filled before, maybe it was the pump, but I’m wondering what was going on
before.

In any case the scanner is a very useful relatively cheap device for these
newer cars with all the nannies.

I see this in my Nissan, not that it's particularly relevant to your
question. First half of the tank covers about 2/3 of the total
range. Gauge drops rapidly once half a tank. I figure it's marketing,
somehow. "Wow I've gone 100 miles and the gauge is still on Full"
